Gun sales increase after Obama win.
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-guns12-2008nov12,0,2706654.story

Lovely

Reporting from Houston -- A week after the election of the nation's first black president, gun buyers across the country are flocking to gun stores to stock up on assault rifles, handguns and ammunition.

Some say they are worried that the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama will attempt to re- impose the ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004. Others fear the loss of their right to own handguns. A few say they are preparing to protect themselves in the event of a race war.

But whatever the reason, gun dealers in red and blue states alike say they've never seen anything like the run on weaponry they've been experiencing since election day, surpassing the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.<...>

1. Oh, more kids' deaths will be on the way
All these skeeredy folks think that they will just happen to have that gun to run off a burglar when in fact the weapon is more likely to be used against someone they love, through anger or accident. Idiots.

8. Do I have to pay for that
If they go to a public hospital because they spent their money on guns instead of insurance?

Just doesn't seem right.

9. Fact: Most stabbings are not at the hands of strangers.
Oh, and most rapes are instigated by somebody the victim knows....and most child molestations (etc. etc. etc.)

Less, or more, of the tools may not fix the problem.

OTOH, I'd love to see a US citizenship test, and local gun laws test, required for purchasers. That should help keep the militia well regulated, and weed out some folks with less than exceptional judgment skills. ;)

Mom reported that guns sales have gone up drastically in our very red hometown county.

7. Nah.. it's just turkey hunting season.
And deer season. And they don't differentiate between normal hunting season purchases and this election. But if they did, it wouldn't be a story.

21. Only a small percentage of gun owners are hunters (1 in 5).
Bolt-actions and turkey guns aren't sold out and backordered three to ten months right now; small-caliber carbines with modern styling (AR-15 platform, civilian AK's) are.

Obviously, it's GREAT for the firearms industry!

13. I don't get it. For $400 you can buy a cheap reasonable quality bike but for the same

cash you can buy a fairly quality 9mm handgun or revolver.

The bike will cost you maybe $25 in maintainence
per year and increase your physical fitness.

The gun will cost you several hundred to a thousand
dollars in ammo, gun club fees and gunsmith maintenance
per year while you get no useful exercise outside of
walking to your car. Not to mention it will be very hard
to kill yourself accidentally on the bike. The gun, pretty
easy.

22. More people die in bicycle accidents than gun accidents...
around 1000/yr vs 750/yr, IIRC.

FWIW, I own a road bike and several firearms; they are not mutually exclusive. And if you can work on your own bike, you can work on your own guns (no need to pay a gunsmith), particularly if you own relatively modern designs.

14. They waited til now to stock up on assault rifles and handguns?
Why didn't they rush out in 2004 when the ban was lifted?

Is it really worth it to buy these guns at the prices they cost in this economy?

should be put on some sort of watch list. I see this behavior as very threat-like.

illegal unless you have a special permit since 1934 I believe.

19. Like the economic collapse doesn't have anything to do with it.
Gun dealers have been strongly pushing the whole "socialist take over" for just this purpose. Scaring the public and inciting bigots is an effective marketing strategy. Who knew?

25. Us citizens already own more guns then there are people in the US, how many more do they need?
Seriously though, one of my people I work with has a relative who's fanatical about guns, always voting for whoever the NRA tells him to. That crazy relative of his has been saying to stock up on guns now before Obama makes owning guns illegal, as if Obama could even outlaw guns and undo the second amendment the second he takes office.

26. Admittedly, I was going to go into armory mode if McCain won
I just figured if we made another stupid choice and embraced the same failed policies that it would result in a high chance of "the shit going down".
That is some of the cover story on the other side mixed in with greater parts of race and culture war. However, they also are perhaps rightfully concerned about the passage of bans and/or taxes being raised substantially on gun and ammunition purchases. So there is a bit of a "in before the lock" factor going on.

The rational gun owners don't have much fear of confiscation but bans make you have to go through illegal channels and pay premium prices for mass produced products if want a piece badly enough.

Now the silly buggers have created a bubble, so I'll wait until they glutted after Christmas to make any "just in case" purchases. I'm not worried much about Obama on this one though, he's a pragmatist and it would be a huge waste of political capital to do anything about guns when we'll have to fight tooth and nail to get the big things accomplished we need for all Americans.
