What's with this mandatory national service crap?

Is it all just RW paranoia? It seems to be connected to the very vague ideas about a civilian national security force, whatever that might be, which Obama mentioned in a speech in July. Then the other day someone posted a video purporting to show Rahm Emanuel discussing mandatory national service between the ages of 18 - 25. 11. I don't recall Obama saying anything about mandatory service...

he did say, often in his stump speeches, that significant college tuition assistance would be made available--"conditional upon" some form of community or national service. That's still voluntary, though. Did anybody hear anything other than that?

For Repubs and their ilk "Country First" really is just a slogan. The idea of actually doing something that puts country before their own interests is abhorrent.

That being said, I'll wait to see legislation before I make any other judgment. And many high schools around the country already require students to complete some community service in order to graduate.
