Steele vs Gingrich for RNC Chair
I'm pulling for Steele in this fight. While he brings a needed change of hue to the sea of elderly white in that party, he also drags with him an almost empty resume that consists of really nothing more than "Hung around republicans for the last 15 years" and "Coined the phrase 'Drill baby drill'". I think the fiscal damage he would do to the party in that position far outweighs the benefit to the republicans of having a "person of colour" to point to and say "look we have one too". Steele also seems to be more a part of the hate radio cabal than Gingrich is, though both give their fair share of time to the medium. The more hate radio is involved in that party, the better we do in elections.

Gingrich - to most of us - is damaged goods as well given his monumentally poor performance in the late 90s but that hasn't stopped republicans and conservatives alike from rallying around him over the last 10 years.

DU, who do you think would do more damage in that position?

2. I read somewhere here this week that Grampa Fred Thompson also wants it.
Gingrich and his contract on America, we still haven't recovered from that.

4. Not me. Give me ol' Newt anyday. But I'm sure they will give us Steele so that
they can claim that they are representing change.

7. I believe that's one of the reasons they'll pick Steele as well.
And that's good for us because I think Steele would be a disaster, worse than Newt who I think would probably do a fine job as head of that operation. As such, I'm pulling for Steele. Why are you for Gingrich on this one? I'm just curious :)

5. I doubt they'll choose Newt - he's the poster boy of the failed Repub brand.
He overreaches so spectacularly that his failures are truly epic.

6. It's not my call but
I'd go for Steele. I would certainly like to see the GOP move away from the nastiness that Gingrich brought to the party. Whether they can is another story but I'd like to see them at least make an attempt.

This country is in a terrible mess and will need everyone's support to turn it around. I want to see everyone working together.

8. Steele because he is not as articulate as Gingrich.

Gingrich knows how to sound reasonable and intelligent while lying.

Steele comes off as someone who doesn't.

He's such a pompous idiot. On the other hand, maybe that's a good thing.

12. He makes more sense to me than Newt does. Of course that is an awfully low threshold.
In short, the "Republican Bench" is lacking, to say the least.
The fact that Newt or Steele are even being mentioned as possible national leaders is quite telling. Newt is absolutely discredited after his ignominious fall from grace because of rank hypocrisy during the impeachment of Clinton. Steele has had no elected office experience other than as a running mate/Lt. Governor. And Steele was clearly an affirmative action running mate - not unlike Sarah Palin.

10. Newt is more of a Lee Atwater type
with his use of language as a "mechanism of control." Here is a link to his famous word lists to teach Republicans how to use positive language about their candidates and negative word lists on their opponents.

Contrasting Words
Often we search hard for words to define our opponents. Sometimes we are hesitant to use contrast. Remember that creating a difference helps you. These are powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contrast. Apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals and their party.

there for consideration. Tom DeLay, anyone?

15. Steele said a few months ago that he would consider leaving the Republican party
He was on an AA radio show and he told the host that he would consider leaving the party because they are not doing enough outreach to AA's. This was a couple of months ago, before they started showing the deranged rallies for McCain/Palin.

I wish he would get the RNC chair and start to do his outreach into the AA community. He will definately get an earful.

Steele brings more hate radio with him than Gingrich imo and that's what I want. More hate radio means more elections that we win.
