Poll question: Will we ever have an openly "non-Christian" president?
Edited on Fri Nov-14-08 10:22 AM by gmoney
With so much talk about Obama being the first black president, and the seeming likelihood of a woman president within 20 years, in my eyes, the REAL notable achievement for the US would be to elect a candidate who identifies as something other than a branch of Christianity.

So, what's the most likely religious "minority" ?

3. If things go right (I mean left) and religion starts taking the backseat AGAIN.
Anything is a possibility.

5. NOTA. In some people's eyes, we already did: Kennedy.
I remember vicious anti-Catholic sentiment as a child. I was too young to really remember Kennedy, but I remember the hate.

12. It used to be (and still is in the reddest areas), Catholics = Jews.
Fundies don't consider Catholicism a Christian religion.

With Kennedy and now Biden elected, I could see a Jew being elected on top of the ticket..

6. I could see Jewish
We more or less did elect a Jewish VP already. I think it would be a VERY long time before we elected someone who was atheistic, agnostic, Muslim, or Hindu, though. Just electing Congressional representatives with those characteristics is a small step that we should aim for and be proud of.

17. Probably in a generation or two, a non-religious candidate can have a serious chance.
When all the old people die out, it'll get easier. I never understood why being a person of "faith" is somehow qualifying to be President.

I seriously doubt that we will ever see an atheist as President.
