Hillary as SoS: Why in the world not? |

I see many people here opposing it but I don't know why... any valid reasons?

If as SOS (Hillary, orwho ever that is) follows the Obama foreign policy objectives it really doesn't matter.

6. It helps to label his admin as the third Clinton Term (something they've already been pushing). |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-14-08 11:16 AM by Skwmom
It will NOT help unite this country (the Clintons are not liked OR trusted by MANY on the left AND right), once appointed she will have a tremendous amount of power to do her own thing b/c there is NO WAY Obama will be able to get rid of her, and it fuels the meme that he is unqualified (she will answer the 3 a.m. call for him).
I voted and worked for change. I didn't vote and work for more of the same.

8. What qualifications does she have for the position? |
|
How is she more qualified than Bill Richardson, who was an ambassador and has extensive diplomatic experience? How is she more qualified than John Kerry, who's served for many years as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee?

|
that are better than so many other candidates for the job? I think she has some major baggage, also, such as threatening to obliterate Iran and a history of talking tough on Iran. It would seem to hobble her ability to do anything in the Middle East.

on how Hill admonished Obama for his view of how he would relate to other countries. She was at opposite ends of the pole from him. SOS? It just doesn't seem like a fit. Remember Hill sold the war like a rethuglican trooper. Bomb first, talk later. That is why I do not want her as SOS. We need a SOS that believes in diplomacy first.

|
they are obvious efforts to build public pressure on Obama to pick Hillary by riling up her supporters. It is a wholly bullshit tactic.
If Obama chooses Hillary of his own will, he will be the one telling us, not leaks.
Anything else is just an attempt to influence his decision.

34. I actually think she'd be much better as AG, Health or even Education |
|
I think she'd be really great in the above three cabinet positions. She's had a proven background and experience in all three areas.
By contrast I think Kerry, Richardson, Holbrooke or someone like that should have State -someone with a foreign policy background. Bill Clinton would make an excellent SOS but unfortunately it would probably create a whole lot of unecessary controversy during the transition period that Obama doesn't need. Jimmy Carter would be another good choice but I'm guessing he's too old

|
Generally the Secretary of State is picked from the ranks of people who are experts in foreign policy. Hillary knows foreign policy very well but I would hardly call her an expert. Then again, maybe if Obama picks her it will be because he has a good reason for bucking the conventional wisdom for picking a Secretary of State. After all, he is going to be the change President.
