Minnie's character was rooted in a genuine love of "just plain folks," not in being a self-serving caricature of them. She was was quite popular in the black community as well.

...Sarah Ophelia Colley came from money...Her father was a sawmill owner, but...the Depression hit...(I)nstead of attending college, she went to...finishing school...She was smitten with theater, and after graduation she joined the Sewell Company, touring the south as part of their cast.

Soon, she was playing a character based on the woman she had stayed with...(S)he...selected the name Minnie Pearl...and after a trip to a thrift store in South Carolina, she had her trademark costume--minus the ($1.98) price tag on her hat, which she would add in later years.
