Hillary will be a great secretary of state: Bill Clinton

Hillary will be a great secretary of state: Bill Clinton

<...>

"If he (Obama) decided to ask her and they did it together, I think she'll be really great as a secretary of state," Clinton told an economic conference in Kuwait hosted by the National Bank of Kuwait.

"She worked very hard for his election after the primary fight with him, and so did I, and we were very glad that he won and we have a lot of confidence that he can do a good job.

"But she didn't do what she did with the hope or expectation of getting any kind of job offer, much less having this discussed," Clinton said.

<...>

Hillary Clinton, 61, has extensive foreign policy experience from her time in the senate, where she serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and indirectly when her husband was president from 1993 to 2001.

The former president said that he had a couple of phone conversations with his wife in the past two days but that he was unaware if the issue of her appointment was discussed between the Obama camp and Hillary.

"The truth is I don't know," he said.

James Carville:

BLITZER: Senator Hillary Clinton avoiding, but not denying the possibility that she might become Barack Obama ’s secretary of state. Word that the president-elect is, indeed, considering his former political rival to be his top diplomat shook up what was a relatively quiet transition week. Let’s discuss this and more with two of the best members on the best political team on television. The Democratic strategist James Carville joining us in New Orleans. And the Republican strategist Ed Rollins is joining us in New York.

James, what do you think, is she likely to be the next secretary of state of the United States?

CARVILLE: Well, we do speculate. I would speculate that there’s a lot of momentum from this and I sense in my conversations I have had and I have talked to people and I have talked to people who have talked to people, is that this thing could very well happen. Not saying that it’s a done deal, I would be surprised but not shocked if it didn’t happen. But I think the momentum is clearly for it to happen.

BLITZER: Any idea, James, when the announcement, if it happens, might take place? Are we talking days, weeks?

CARVILLE: Right, I don’t have any sort of personal knowledge, but I think Ed would vouch for this, that they’re going to have to do it pretty soon. It’s only so long that this can sit out here. There are probably some things that have to be worked out that people are working very hard now.

But my sense is, and I don’t base this on any first-hand knowledge is that they can’t leave it hanging out there for very long.

12. define "Clinton-hating clowns", please. Because my assessment of both Clintons in general
any Hillary's specifically as regards the position of SoS, is based on objective facts, actual achievements, proven comportment and known compatriots.

My emotional reactions have precious little to do with how I rate both Clintons and their conduct on the political stage, their choice of allies and their track record.

Bill: Hillary Would Be "Great At Being Secretary Of State"

By Eric Kleefeld - November 17, 2008, 9:31AM

Bill Clinton is weighing in on the talk that Hillary could end up being appointed Secretary of State, giving her a strong but cautious endorsement.

Speaking yesterday to a business conference in Kuwait, Bill said that both Hillary and himself worked very hard to get Obama elected, but added that they didn't do it with any expectation of a job offer.

"But if she decided -- if he decided to ask her to do it, and they did it together, I think she'd be really great at being Secretary of State," Bill said. "But I have no Earthly idea what is gonna happen."

Bill is obviously walking a tightrope here, in that he wants to talk up Hillary's prospects but can't cross the line into making outright demands that would decrease her chances. And top of that, his own presence is an issue, with the Obama transition team vetting his own dealings with foreign business and governments in order to determine whether there would be any conflicts of interest.

Is anyone going to acknowledge how inappropriate this is?

14. Is Bill Clinton LOBBYING HARD for his wife to get the job?
If so, that takes her off the short list, given how the game has been played thus far.

Clinton interviews for State Dept.

Richardson in running; hopes for Kerry dim

By Nedra Pickler
Associated Press / November 15, 2008

WASHINGTON - President-elect Barack Obama is considering primary election rivals Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson to be his secretary of state, as Senator John F. Kerry, an early supporter of Obama, appeared to be out of the running according to Democratic officials.

Obama met with Richardson yesterday in Chicago, a day after conferring one-on-one with Clinton at his Chicago office, said several Democratic officials.

Senior foreign relations staffers on Capitol Hill yesterday were abuzz with news that Clinton would be the pick for secretary of state.

Staff for Kerry appeared to prepare for the senator to take over leadership of the Senate Foreign Relations committee. Kerry, who gave Obama an opportunity to give the keynote speech in 2004 that turned him into a nationally known figure, was said to be lobbying heavily for the job. A spokesman for Kerry did not return calls seeking comment.

During much of the primary Clinton and Obama spent a great amount of time criticizing each other on foreign policy, with Clinton portraying Obama as naive for his pledge to meet unconditionally with leaders of Iran and other US enemies.

more

Summary of rumors: Obama has already offered the job to Hillary; Kerry was lobbying hard and has now been ruled out.

Yet Bill is talking up Hillary while he's rumored to be going through the vetting process.

WJC, cooperating

Yet he's talking her up for the position while claiming not to know anything about it.

Bill needs to become familiar with "no comment."

8. And he 'never heard' about the Downing Street Memos, either. Though he was Blair's top US advisor
and consulted with him alot on his early dealings with Bush.

Is he trying to draw focus to his business dealings which could sabotage her chances?

This is bizarre.

Just for the fun of it, how many threads have you started on this same subject?

We get it, trust me, we get it. You don't like either Clinton, it was clear during the primaries.

How about letting it go and waiting to see how this thing plays out?
