My 1000th Post - I changed a vote. |
|
So its not a big deal, as we're in California, and there was never any doubt that the state would go for Obama. But I live in a fairly red area of the state, and my crazy liberal views are fodder for much discussion and teasing at my job.
However, I am known as someone who reads the news, knows statistics, can provide arguments, etc. And people know that we can talk politics, even if we don't always agree.
Well, a few weeks before the election I had spent about an hour talking to one of the women who volunteers where I work. She told me she was voting for McCain, and she told me why. And then I started laying out reasons that she might not want to. I was not confrontational, and I tried to always have facts on my side. I encouraged her to read up a bit on Palin, who she said she liked, and I tried to point out some of her less personal, more political faults. The woman said that I had given her a lot to think about.
I saw her last night. She came up to me and asked me how I felt about the outcome of the election, and I told her that I was thrilled, even in the face of Prop 8 failing. She leaned close to me and whispered, "I just wanted you to know that I did the research you told me to, and I decided that I just could not deal with the possibility of Palin becoming president. So I voted for Obama. And I'm happy I did - I really think I did the right thing."
I was grinning for the rest of the night... :)

You impacted one person, and that person may impact another person, etc., etc., etc.
Right now, President-elect Obama needs as many people on his side as he can get. Therefore, your impact didn't end once the election was over. She'll be influencing others...
:)
(On edit: Congratulations on your 1000th post! :toast:)

I am very curious as to how many people secretly voted for Obama. Wouldn't that be an interesting list to see?
