Woman needs psychiatric help because of Obama winning.
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 04:30 PM by Erin Elizabeth
Yep, seriously.

I ran into someone this morning I haven't seen in a while (maybe a few months) and she's SO upset over Obama's win that she's seeing a counselor. For real. She doesn't know where I fall on the political spectrum, we've just been friendly acquaintances for years. But she was SO damn bummed when I saw her today, she looked like she was going to burst into tears at any moment. Normally she's a pretty cheerful person. I asked her what was wrong and she teared up and said "Obama's what's wrong."

I was so confused by that, because I thought she'd say her dog had died, or her adult daughter was terminally ill, that I couldn't make sense of it at first.

"O-what's what?"

"OBAMA. You know, that...MIXED.....PERSON......who is SUPPOSEDLY going to be THE PRESIDENT."

Direct quote. That.....MIXED.....PERSON. She struggled to say "person." And "president." And how is it supposedly?

So I told her a true story: this morning at about 6:30 am, I was grumbling about it being Monday and everything I have to do this week and I got an email about a dear high school friend who finally lost her fight to cancer last night. On her 38th birthday. With two young daughters. Right before the holidays.

I assured her things could be SO much worse than a "mixed person" in the White House. She was just staring at me. So I asked her how long she's felt this way.

"Felt what way?"

"So...against....non-white people?"

She said she's not hateful, just a Republican. I nearly laughed. But she went on to say she found a counselor last week because she's going to need a lot of help to deal with this. A LOT of help.

My God. Get a grip, woman. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I didn't even go to a counselor in the eight years we had to deal with a president who had an IQ of a fucking amoeba. And I certainly had times when it would have been necessary.

So we get a good, SMART guy in there and she needs psychiatric help because his daddy was black. What is wrong with this world?

To edit, at least she's getting help. I hope she's going to see this one counselor I know of: a no-nonsense woman who will just sort of shake her up and tell her to stop being so hateful and snap out of it. (She's a bit different from most counselors, I admit. But I think she's great. She wouldn't tolerate this self-pity because the president's mixed business for one hot second.)

4. I know so many mixed race people.
My hairdresser's son is half-white, half-black and he's a kid but he understands Obama's dad was black and his mom was white, too and he's so proud he's about ready to bust!

I will tell her hi and fuck off!

He goes on and on about Obama and he's so cute when he says "the president is just like me!" I love it! And my daughter's two best friends are mixed, too.

but thanks for sharing your story. My White brothers are married to Black and Indian women and my sister is married to a Black guy. They all have 3 kids each-all my nieces and nephews. I'm married to a Japanese guy-no kids. Our family looks like the UN and we all love it. The kids had t-shirts that read, "Obama for my future!" :)

8. Look at it this way. She's contributing to her local economy.
I'm going to assume that this woman has some extra money lying around, enough to spend on a therapist to deal with her racism. So I see two beneficial results. One is that some of her money will go into the local economy through her therapist, and the other is that she might actually get help with her racism. A win-win.

10. Maybe that's the best thing she can do
Perhaps talking with someone she can work through her deep-seated racist feelings which are based on fear. Perhaps she can learn not to feel fear over irrational things like a President's skin color. There might be something deeper here too that she's not telling you. I was thinking perhaps she might have been a crime victim or something.

I've been a victim of crimes and they didn't make me racist. It doesn't work that way.

Anyway, does Obama look remotely like a criminal to any sane person? Can any sane person imagine Obama triggering post-traumatic stress? No, I don't believe so.

Most of them need it, and it's good news to hear of someone getting help. As long as she stays away from Catholic priests, she has a chance.

I guess these people are waking up from their fantasy land where George is a hero, torture is 'okay', and the dollar is infallible, etc. No telling what might break forth.

I bet if you asked her about the current economic crisis, she would say it started on November 5th in response to Obama's election. I bet she seriously can not remember this October's stock market crash, the lending crisis, the housing bubble, etc.

These people do need help. And at least this one realizes it.

up the ladder of accomplishment.

But not up to the biggest position in the US - the PRESIDENT! Not that! She apparently perceives it as an entitlement that should only belong to whites.

Good luck to that counselor.

On the upside, Obama's candidacy and presidency has been an enlightening experience for lots and lots of people.

38. Interesting question. I was wondering the same thing.
Most of the therapists I know of are pretty much reality-therapy types, teaching cognitive behavioral imaging, working on prolonged exposure therapies for trauma management, etc.

I don't know where something like this would fall on the spectrum of internal/external origins and how it would be approached as a therapeutic issue.

I suspect a fair amount of attention to getting her to articulate the basis for her anxiety, then dissecting it in the light of day, might be a fruitful, if slightly risky approach.

Most fears and anxieties tend to get less acute when you can look them over in detail, in a safe place, with a supportive person to help you compare them to reality, etc.

Good for her that she's willing to get help. I hope it's the start of a whole new approach to life for her. Life is a lot easier when you can look at it as being full of interesting potential friends, as opposed to scary potential enemies.

compassionately,
Bright

I would have needed a strong support group if mccain-palin had somehow gotten in and implemented their agenda to wipe out the Planet.

It's disturbing how many ignorant brainwashed people there are.

It was always very encouraging to me when a republican saw the light and didn't want four more years of America and the world going down the drain just because they were "republican".

I saw one over the weekend who told my husband and me that she could never trust anyone with the name Barack Hussein Obama because it "sounded Muslim". My husband immediately asked, "And what is so wrong with Muslims?" while I chimed in with "You know he didn't name himself, don't you? Would you like someone to judge you solely on your name that was given to you at birth?" We were ready with lots more things to say, but the person sort of shrank into themselves and didn't say another thing.

Do I regret traumatizing this person? No way! :D

But maybe something similar happened to your acquaintance. Anyway, may she get help-it would be nice if her shrink was a nice mixed person of a non-Christian persuasion.

I might need to refer several paranoid women from my debate board over there. They're still freaking out about Obama taking their guns, their money - and the fact that he's not even a US Citizen. They're very *scared*, as well. I think that's their anti-christ fear.

80. I'm horrible....the women I know on the internet like that? I've been
fucking with them. Telling them stuff that Obama is going to do that they would believe, but that no rational person would ever believe. They are freaking the fuck out, except that two or three of the more lucid ones are finally catching on that I'm fucking with them. It puts all their fears in the same silly light. Hopefully they'll chill out.

60. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend
This woman is batpoop crazy. I'm like you - the last 8 years have driven me absolutely nuts, but not to the point where I've had to seek counseling. Arrrrggghhhh!

62. There's definitely more going on here than meets the eye.
If she's this psychologically overwrought because a man was elected president who is not 100% white, she's got deeper issues she should definitely explore with a professional. Chances are that professional will find out that there's a whole 'nother set of problems lurking under the surface.

Condolences to you on the loss of your friend.

64. You know she isn't going to ask to become an ex-racist
A good and very patient counselor might have a chance of getting the woman to the point where she confronts and attempts to repudiate her own racism. However, that isn't why she is going to the counselor--to cure her racism--she's going to the counselor to get some drugs so she can cope with the "calamity" of having a mixed person in the lily white house. If the counselor tells her that the problem is her (her racism), not Obama, she'll most likely just leave and find someone willing to give her the drugs.

I would have had to tell her she didn't need a counselor, she needs a full blown shrink because she's nutty as a fruitcake :eyes:

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, that's never an easy thing.

67. Sounds like my mother minus the racist crap
She is depressed over the election. I told her I got over Shrub winning "TWICE". She thinks Obama's grandmother is not his real G-ma. WTF? She is my mother, I love her, but drinks the Rethug kool-aid.

... and other propaganda will do to a person. She sounds exactly like someone who's just got out of a cult and needs to be "deprogrammed".

85. Sorry to be personal, but aren't you in the DFW area?
I seem to recall you mentioning something that placed you in the area. If so, you should send her my husband's way. He's a therapist here in the metroplex, and he would be like the counselor friend of yours - no nonsense. He'd tell her to get a grip and get over herself.

Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 10:03 PM by cooolandrew
but she can't come to terms with the way they have told her to think and how Barack being president has to make her come to terms with thinking. In respect of being accepting. The fact she said mixed race instead of a racial slur says she knows what she's been told is the wrong way to think and is doing something about it.

87. I had a Counselor like that ONCE.
Eventually, I got up the courage to drop her. I didn't see anyone else for a while because I felt so "mind-fucked". The no-nonsense, "snap out of it" approach is inappropriate in the beginning of the therapy relationship.

I hope she gets someone a lot gentler who can help her come to this conclusion on her own.

88. Let's see - maybe I have some empathy for her somewhere...NOPE!
sorry.

Nothing.
Nada.
Zilch.

And I believe the story, because there's a few repukes at work - and these are professional ARCHITECTS with college degrees! - who feel the same way!!! And I mean the same way...

It's so fucking FUN to watch them completely lose it and grasp at every little "phoney birthcertificate he's never gonna reach the inauguration" shit that's out there...!

And I gently twist the RUSTY knife in a little further for them by reminding them "That's PRESIDENT Barack HUSSEIN Obama for YOU!"

They go absolutely apeshit...

I must admit they've become a LOT more quieter these past few days...
