CNN's Dana Bash reported Lieberman will keep Homeland Security chairmanship
What do the Senators have to say about the fact that Lieberman held zero oversight hearings. Why would Lieberman be rewarded for not doing his job while pissing on our nominee at every opportunity?

How do you justify keeping Lieberman head of Homeland Security, Senators?

19. More from Talkingpointsmemo. Dem leadership will propose Lieberman keep the chairmanship

Source: Dem Leadership Will Propose That Lieberman Keep Homeland Security Chairmanship

By Greg Sargent - November 17, 2008, 5:49PM

When Senate Dems caucus tomorrow, the Democratic leadership is likely to propose that he keep his homeland security chairmanship but lose a lesser sub-committee chairmanship instead, according to a source familiar with the situation.

If it happens that way, Senate Dems will be allowing Lieberman to keep his plum spot despite the fact that he has been a disaster at the post, and despite the fact that he endorsed efforts by the GOP to imply that Obama is in league with terrorists, suggested that Obama endangered our troops, and said Obama hasn't always put the country first.

According to the source, the Dem leadership is expected to propose instead that Lieberman be stripped of his chairmanship of the lesser Environment and Public Works subcommittee, a comparatively meaningless punitive action.

The move, which is not un-expected and was reported earlier in Roll Call, comes despite the fact that Lieberman had lost momentum in recent days, with Senators Patrick Leahy, Bernie Sanders and Byron Dorgan all expressing strong opposition to him keeping the chairmanship. Even a Lieberman ally, Senator Tom Carper, said today that Lieberman should face consequences that are not "insignificant."

It remains to be seen whether stripping Lieberman of his environmental committee role will be seen as "significant "by people who think that Lieberman's actions show him to be completely out of sync with the values and ideas of the Democratic Party on some of the most pressing issues facing us.

Many Democrats believe that effort to oust Lieberman from the Homeland Security chairmanship were dealt a death knell last week, when Barack Obama said he held "no grudges" against Lieberman. Though Obama said he wouldn't "referee" the question over the chairmanship, Obama's statement had the practical effect of allowing Lieberman's allies to claim Obama's support and giving cover to those who want to do nothing about Lieberman's transgressions.

11. True and well said. We should wait and see. But consider this:
How often, in the last eight years, have "day before" rumors of Democratic Congressional Shameless Spineless Behaviorcome true?

Have they EVER, inthe last 8 years, NOT been true?

Because though I might be wrong on one or tewo incidents, the last eight years have gone something like this.

Democratic Congressional Leadership Talks Tough.

Rumors come out Democratic Congressional Leadership to cave on pretty much everything.

DU screams, "SAY IT AIN'T SO!"

"Day Before" rumors confirm, Democratic Congressional Leadership to cave shamefully and completely, ignoring their base as much as the Bushies do the Democratic Base.

DU screams, "SAY IT AIN'T SO!"

Vote comes, Democratic Congress caves and caspitulates in exactly the manner they were rumored to days ago. EXACTLY. Shameful, complete and total capitulation.

I mean, honestly, name me even one SINGLE TIME it didn't happen just like this in the past 8 years.

(and maybe you can do that, but I'll bet you can't find many incidents to pair with your "exception to the rule" if one even exists that doesn't have to be madly spun to apply here)

So, while I agree in principle with what you say, chmipsrsmarter, the mighty preponderance of previous data suggest why "beat the Christmas Rush" and actually WAIT for the Democratioc Congressional Leadership to behave shamefully? Once the rumors of shameful disgusting digraceful odious toadying Democratic Capitualtion starts, it is a 99% certainty that complete and total shameful DemocraticCapitulation IS WHAT WE WILL SEE!

Awareness exposing their secrets?

Maybe they're just as big a bunch of assholes as the Bushies, who's job it is to "pretend" they give a fart in a windstorm about the Filthy Little Peasnats they rule (that's US).

I don't know and I simply don't care. I just know I despise them as disgraceful cowards (with a handful of notable exceptions).

This is wholly and completely unsurprising.

I don't know how many horrible disappointments it will take from these assholes before I learn. Each disappointment is as painful as the last. I wish I could get to the point where you are where none of this surprises me. But I keep thinking, "THIS time will be different. THIS time they're going to do what's right. THIS time someone's going to be held accountable." Utterly stupid.

They are impotent, self-serving, crony-loving, cowards. And they are ruining what's left of our country.

10. I think a DEMOCRAT should have that position
Joe Lieberman ran as a Dem in his senate primary and lost. He is now an Independent. If he continues to claim he is a Democrat, does he then deserve to lose his Senate seat, since he lost that primary AS A DEMOCRAT?

Inquiring minds.

18. Here's a thought
What if Obama let Joe keep his Homeland Security chair because there are plans to change that department to make it less prominent or even abolish it entirely in favor of a different agency, designed by Obama, that actually *does things* to keep our country safe?

I'm in the total 'wait and see' mode. I still think Obama's 10 chess moves ahead of the rest of us.

21. Time to take it to the People then if this is really so.
The case is strong against lieberman not to be the head of oversighting ANYTHING..much less our protection at HS.

Senator Dorgan's view..

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/11/16/dorgan-lieberman /

And Jason Leopold's from Consortium News..

<snip>

"Most of the attention on whether Joe Lieberman should be ousted from his Senate committee chairmanship has focused on his disloyalty to Democrats and his control of homeland security issues, but there’s also the question of how well he has handled his panel’s broad government oversight responsibilities.

In contrast to his House counterpart, Rep. Henry Waxman, who has chaired dozens of high-profile hearings on the Bush administration’s wrongdoing the past two years, Sen. Lieberman has not held a single hearing on Executive Branch malfeasance nor has he issued any subpoenas demanding information from the administration.

That means Lieberman’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has passed over for hearings issues such as warrantless domestic surveillance, Iraq contracting fraud, “enhanced interrogation” of detainees, and the bungled response to Hurricane Katrina."

It's Official: Full Dem Caucus Will Vote On Lieberman's Fate

By Greg Sargent - November 11, 2008

The full Democratic caucus will vote on whether Joe Lieberman is allowed to keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security committee at its caucus meeting next week, a leadership aide confirms to us.

Previously, Reid's office had held this possibility out but hadn't made a final decision on whether to throw Lieberman's fate to the full Dem caucus for a vote.
