BREAKING: McCain's Lead in MO Dwindling, See the Last Results Come In LIVE
As of yesterday the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported ( http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/political-fix/political-fix/2008/11/ongoing-missouri-president-contest-gets-even-tighter/ ) that McCain's lead over Obama had Dwindled down to 4,716.

The very last of the provisional ballots are coming in and every county in Missouri is required to report TODAY.

By my calculation McCain's lead is NOW DOWN TO: 4,393

Check out the returns as they come in at: http://www.sos.mo.gov/enrweb/statewideresults.asp?eid=256

Toward the bottom of the page you'll see election results as of ________. Refresh your browser to get the very latest.

As the bigger counties come in, watch McCain lead dwindle and dwindle.

I highly doubt MO will go blue, but it could get a hell of lot closer.

Today MO will be some kind of color.

K&R this puppy if you care.

The Senate races that haven't been decided are the interesting thing now. 1 more state won't mean much at this point.

Ralph Nader, with 17,000 votes . . . . .you know the drill. At least this time, the knife in the back wasn't fatal.

13. I'm not sure ...
But I'm guessing that the Obama campaign would turn down the recount because insisting on it might look negative, especially once they attach the amount of taxpayers dollars to make it happen.

Just so they can stop with that stupid bellweather shit. Missouri is getting redder and redder by the year. Now we can stop here that crap that whoever Missouri votes for wins the election.

34. Actually that's not true
First off, we elected a Dem governor this year. In '06 we elected Clarie McCaskill, you know, one of Obama's early backers. And I'm sorry that you dislike that "stupid bellweather shit" but you know what, given our demographic makeup, it isn't that surprising, and something that we here in the state are rather proud of. Sounds to me you're just a bit jealous:shrug:

Oh, and check out this <http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/11/05/us/politics/20081104_ELECTION_RECAP.html>

Hmm, looks like Missouri actually went more blue in '08 than '04. Guess that shoots your contention that "Missouri is getting redder and redder by the year." all to hell.

18. The Post Dispatch Goes Into It
But in short, it's because of all the provisional ballots that have to be verified.

Each one has to be checked to make sure that the person who cast it is registered.

There were more than 7,000 provisional ballots statewide in Missouri.

It has said Precincts Reporting 3533 of 3533 since Nov. 4, but the numbers continue to change.

The precincts have reported, but the information continues to change.

Each county is supposed to have their final results in by COB today.

The site was just updated again.

McCain's lead was slightly tweaked, it's now down to 4,385.

I don't know if there are any outstanding big counties that are going to get added in at the last minute.

I figure that once tallies are totally official and the news breaks the MO state wire will have it: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/fronts/MISSOURILATEST?SITE=AP

41. Excellent
Definately tighter, but I have to wonder if it's going to get much tighter than that.

It was said that some results would still be trickling in today, but I'm wondering if most are calculated by now.

There were under 8,000 provisional ballots that could swing the vote.

That's the only thing that could change the vote because it's not like this is a recount.

Even if it gets close enough to trigger a recount, I don't think the Obama campaign will seek it.

42. The Math
It looks like Missouri has wrapped it up.

I haven't heard anything official yet, but here are the numbers.

On election night from Missouri:

Obama: 1,436,745
McCain: 1,442,613
Total: 2,879,358

Election results as of 1:10:57 (CST) on 11/19/2008

Obama: 1,442,145
McCain: 1,445,781
Total: 2,887,926

====================

2,887,926 minus 2,879,358 equals 8,568

The election night stats are from http://www.stltoday.com/mds/news/html/1926

Now, while we know that there were a number of addition errors that made a difference in the numbers, we also know that there weren't too many more than 7,000 provisional ballots.

So the difference of 8,568 between election night and today is probably about it.

With that in McCain's lead is 3,636. Pretty tight, but it keeps Missouri red, red, red.

So much for ...

44. Only ...
1,188 outstanding provisional ballots left to come in, which should trickle in throughout the day.

McCain's lead will probably shrink further, but even 100% of those provisional ballots can't catch Obama up.

Missouri will soon officially become "irrelevant."

45. AP: McCain wins Missouri in close race against Obama
Nov 19, 3:50 PM EST
By DAVID A. LIEB
Associated Press Writer
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/MISSOURI_PRESIDENT_MOOL-?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2008-11-19-15-50-37

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Republican John McCain has defeated Democratic President-elect Barack Obama in Missouri - the last state to be decided in the 2008 presidential election.

McCain's narrow victory over Obama breaks a bellwether streak in which Missourians had picked the winning presidential candidate in every election since 1956.

With all jurisdictions reporting complete but unofficial results, McCain led Obama by 3,632 votes Wednesday out of more than 2.9 million cast - a margin of 0.12 percentage points.

Both men spent considerable resources trying to win Missouri, a state that Obama ultimately did not need for his national victory.

Obama won 365 electoral votes. Missouri's 11 electoral votes will give McCain 173.

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has until Dec. 9 to officially certify the results.

But it's unlikely the vote totals will change significantly because no more ballots can be counted. Rather, the secretary of state's office now will double-check the figures supplied by local officials to make sure no numbers are missing and that the precinct-by-precinct votes have been correctly added.

Once the results are certified, Obama's campaign would have the option under Missouri law of seeking a re-count because McCain's victory margin is less than 1 percentage point.

A telephone message left with the Obama campaign was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Missouri's presidential election was its closest since 1908, when Republican William Howard Taft defeated Democrat William Jennings Bryan by 449 votes out of 716,788 cast - a margin of 0.06 percentage points.

Until this year, Missouri had cast its electoral votes for the losing presidential candidate only once in the past century, and that also was a close election. In 1956, Democrat Adlai Stevenson won Missouri over Republican President Dwight Eisenhower by 3,984 votes out of more than 1.8 million cast - a 0.22 percentage point margin.
