Congrats to all our Alaskan DU'ers....
Edited on Tue Nov-18-08 09:43 PM by Robeson
...you guys have taken it on the chin around here, and have been the butt of many jokes - largely due to the governor who will remain unmentioned - but you all really pulled it through for us. Thank you for the door-to-door knocking you did, the willpower to not back down when talking to your neighbors, and maybe changing an opinion here and there with all your efforts. You did good gang! :toast:

10. You should *hear* the grumblings from Wasilla. I don't say much here at DU or IRL but the victory
is sweet indeed and I love to hear the whining from Alaskan Repubs right now. It's been a sucky 8 years. I wonder how long I can stretch this out for???

31. Yes, we live in Wasilla. The Congrats Sarah posters are only now
starting to come down. The Parks Highway, the main drag, had tons of these signs along the business district. The Palin Fever bumper stickers are still on tons of SUVs. Lots of Wasilla residents are *stunned* that she didn't win. And I do mean SHE.

Now with Stevens loss added as well there are lots of Wasilla residents up here scared shitless about their guns. DH got cornered at one point by a family member who was so enraged the veins in his neck were sticking out.

I'm just enjoying this, tremendously.

36. Oy Vey - sounds like
you're surrounded by crazy up there. Being it's a small town (I don't really know that, it's the way it was portrayed), do you know her personally (or her husband whose name I can't remember)? Do you think she'll run for Pres in 2012?

And really, I can't believe the people up there are pissed that a convicted felon lost the senate race - you'd think they'd be embarassed by that.

38. The small town effect is huge in the valley
which includes both Wasilla and Palmer. After a while all the people you know, know the same people. I admit I found it unnerving when we first moved up here from cosmopolitan Baltimore. It's not really a small town but has the small town feel to it. I would have to argue against the Daily Show portrayal as well. It's not all hickville.

I do not know Palin, she's been quite busy this past year and we only returned to Wasilla in February BUT chances are really good that I'll run into her at some point, esp when she's not the gov anymore. I will probably beat feet to get here and post about it that day. LOL

And yes, racism and gun fears had most of the repubs we know up here totally, completely confident that it would remain a red state and that McCain would win. They were not just crestfallen after the loss but so scared as to be freaky at times. They are sure now that they'll have to defend home and hearth against gun-grabbing dems. I think that after that loss they weren't as surprised about Ted's loss, really. And yes, they would definitely keep a convicted felon on board as long as they knew he'd keep them their guns. I shit you not.

Wasilla out.

40. Freaky is right....
I have a friend whose boyfriend is even "packing" to local hockey games. The day after the election he bought as much ammunition as he could afford. He's completely gone overboard since Mr. Obama won. He doesn't like me much, as I still have a Kucinich bumpersticke on my car. You can imagine how he felt when my Obama bs went on my car.

He has never served in the military and we have a son that just got promoted to E8, but I am the one that is a traitor!

It's a strange life up here, isn't it. I get a lot of shit from my friends, but most of it good natured fun.

This Alaskan is very, very proud of our Senator-elect, Mark Begich.

43. Being from the Baltimore area I get a pass but they have accused me
outright of twisting up my dh who is from ND and is more full-blooded dem than I am sometimes!

Good natured is right. The only issues were right before and right after the election. Things have calmed down now, however, we're having Thanksgiving with them and I'm so curious to see if dh and his uncle have words.

I don't get the whole traitor thing which is why I guess I've been so uncomfortable since 2000 when I *knew* asshat bush would be prez for the next 8 years. This past election was better than anything I could have imagined 8 years ago.

Blocking Ted Stevens from power also means a poke in the eye regarding Sarah Palin's power too.

I am so happy with the outcome. This is the start for better things to come.

Congratulations, Alaska. The lower 48 thanks you.

24. Before McCain announced Palin, Alaska was in play. So, dang right the Alaskans
did a great job. But, how do you vote against someone who wrote a check from oil company revenues to every man, woman and child in Alaska and wondered how she might use the office of the VP to help Alaskans?

Next order of business. Impeach Palin!

As a former Alaska resident, this is great to see. I would have liked for Berkowitz to have taken Young down, but this is a great victory to see the smug little prick Stevens get the boot.

As for Sarah, think she'll challenge Murkowski in '10?
