2. Governor of AZ
She was an early Obama supporter. I doubt that she would take it since a Repub would take her place. She might want to run for Senate in 2010 as well.

Sensible, savvy, and successful. We hate to lose her. She's in her second term and term-limited.

5. Governor of Arizona
And there in lies the problem.

Considering there's a problem with undocumented aliens pouring into the AZ desert, that seems like too easy of a target for the Repukes. And McCain would be leading the way.

6. AZ governor, and she can see Mexico from her state. Really!
Seriously, she's a great governor, and I'd hate to lose her. If she takes the job, I only hope we get a good replacement.

A couple profiles:

The American Prospect
Janet Napolitano and the New Third Way

Arizona's governor has contained Republicans, reinvigorated Democrats, and provided a new model for progressive politics in the West.

And...

The Washington Independent
Cabinet Watch: Janet Napolitano
Arizona Governor's Name Popping Up for Attorney General, Homeland Security

PHOENIX — In late February 2007, when Illinois Sen. Barack Obama asked for a private meeting with Arizona Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, it was the ambitious, smart and politically savvy Napolitano who was making political history. She was the nation’s first woman chair of the National Governors Assn.

Three months before announcing his improbable candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president in May 2007, Obama and Napolitano held a long discussion on a wide range of policy issues during a break at the governors’ winter meeting in Washington. “From that point forward,” Napolitano spokeswoman Jeanine L’Ecuyer said, “she began thinking about him as a viable presidential candidate.”

<snip>

In an interview last summer with the American Prospect, a liberal magazine, Napolitano expressed an interest in serving as attorney general, citing her experience as Arizona’s former attorney general and U.S. attorney. State Republican and Democratic political observers agree she’s highly qualified to run the Justice Dept. and restore it’s tattered reputation under former Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales. In November 2005, Time magazine named her one of the five best governors in the country.

<snip>

Her pragmatic approach to illegal immigration scored her political points nationally. She called for the deployment of the Arizona National Guard on the border with Mexico to stem the flow of illegal immigrants four months before President George W. Bush announced a similar plan. She supports comprehensive immigration reform along the lines pushed by Sen. John McCain before the presidential campaign.

Nafta, banking deregulation, ..... Their track record is impeccable. Here's to hoping they can keep up their "winning" streak.

Who would you like to see instead?

We all know very well who/what you DON'T like.

This is a discussion board.

So discuss who you WOULD like.

Go ahead, don't be shy. We might all learn something.

31. Reducing criminal recidivism rates and fighting for victims rights
Oh, the horror!

Do you know anything about Gov. Napolitano's record or are you just popping off for the hell of it?

She is one of the best leaders the Democratic party has to offer. Her office provided me with a lot of valuable assistance when we were pushing a new victim rights law through the NH House and Senate. She combines toughness with compassion and a respect for the rule of law. She'd make a tremendous cabinet secretary.

17. Not worth it, I think.
AZ should be one of the next states to go blue, 2012. But with a R gov fighting it, I don't see it happening.

Is she term limited? If she is, thats different.

Not that anyones listening to me in the cabinet choosing process.

It's not good.

I was hoping Janet would stay here until she ran against McCain in 2010... Many people here (AZ) hoped she'd become our Senator.

Hmmm. I guess this is okay. McCain will probably only serve one more term. She can run for the Senate, or even President, after Obama's 8 years.

and have a decent foundation to sponge off of. Sets the GOP up too well for my taste.

Homeland Security now includes what used to be the INS, so if Barack is looking at reforming immigration Napolitano would be a good choice to head this department. Her experience as an attorney general also helps coordinate effective policy with the DoJ.

Who knows, maybe this came up in the discussion between Obama and McCain the other day...Maybe he's trying to get some comprehensive reform and McCain was trying to champion it earlier.
