Leahy: Holder an 'outstanding' pick

Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Thursday that Eric Holder, President-elect Barack Obama's reported choice, would be an "outstanding and historic nominee" for attorney general.

If appointed, Holder would be the first African-American to hold the position.

"I have known Eric Holder for many years. If he is President-elect Obama's selection to be the next attorney general, Mr. Holder would bring the kind of leadership, temperament, experience, and judgment we need to restore the rule of law and rebuild the reputation of the Department of Justice so that it is worthy of its name," Leahy said in remarks on the Senate floor.

The Vermont senator offered a laudatory review of Holder's record but made no mention of Holder's role in former President Bill Clinton's pardon of Marc Rich.
