Republicans suffer 'image deficit:' Gallup
by Mark Silva
When you're down, you're down.
"The Republican Party's image has gone from bad to worse over the past month,'' the Gallup Poll's Lydia Saad reports today.
Only 34 pcernt of Americans surveyed last week said they have a favorable view of the party, down from 40 percent in mid-October. With 61 percent now voicing an unfavorable view of the GOP, that is the highest negative rating that Gallup has recorded for the party since 1992.
Seems a couple of Bushes were holding the White House at both peaks. Funny how election results tend to correspond with public opinion.
By contrast, Gallup reports, the public's view of the Democratic Party remains as positive after Election Day as it was just prior to the selection of Presdent-elect Barack Obama. More than half - 55 percent -- currently hold a favorable view of the Democratic Party and 39 percent an unfavorable view.
"The Democratic Party is enjoying an extended stretch of popularity with Americans that started in 2006, and is likely to continue as long as its new party leader, President-elect Barack Obama, continues to inspire high confidence ratings -- and eventually job approval ratings -- from the American people,'' Gallup's Saad writes, noting that the "Republican Party's image deficit'' started well before this election year.
"In December 2005, the Republicans and the Democrats were rated about equally, with just under half of Americans viewing each party favorably. Shortly thereafter, the Republicans' favorable rating fell to 36 percent, and has since struggled to cross the 40 percent threshold. The Democrats' favorable rating gradually improved during 2006, and has not fallen below 51 percent since the spring of that year.''
The results come from a Nov. 13-16 poll of 1,009 adults, with a possible margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
