98. I had a hard time figuring out what was going on as well
It wasn't until Morning Joe where they ran a less blurred out version that I figured out that he was removing the head of the turkey although I still didnt' understand the point of putting it in a tube. I guess I thought they still used axes like they would on a farm.

I realize animals are killed in order to make them "food" but it was bizare that Palin thought that was an appropriate backdrop for a press conference following a turkey "pardon".

And MSNBC blurred out most of it. I'm guessing the Alaska media didn't?

Really though - if you eat meat, poultry or seafood, it's just a fact of life (at least you know where your food is coming from) BUT.....I found it pretty cold hearted to be laughing and rambling nonsense while something's being killed like that on camera.

I'm weird like that I reckon.

52. IMO, she is using this to (further)divide rural from urban people
She obviously knows where is standing, the camera position, and what is going on behind her. At about the 2 minute mark she looks over her shoulder, smiling, at the butcher in acknowledgment. Most urban people aren't used to the butchering of animals for food on their table, so their responses to this film will be different than those of rural people. IMO, that was her intention, to divide.

75. Perhaps the media is subversively setting her up.
Maybe the media is trying to get the word out about how self-absorbed and clueless she really is. I'm sure the news people would have changed the backdrop if she had asked for it. This whole "turkey-pardoning" thing is not going over particularly well here with many veterans and friends of the military because she failed to commemorate Veteran's Day in any way while she was in Miami soaking up the limelight -- didn't even pretape a speech. But the media is all over pardoning a turkey. That's just not right. If she had said anything about Veteran's Day, someone would have picked it up, for sure.

He embodies "that guy" that sticks his hand deep into his pocket while chewing his chaw and nodding like a bobblehead while he tries to get the clearest view of Sarah Palin's mammaries. The "MORAN" guy.. has officially been replaced.

47. The difference between cops and what Palin did
Cops see sick shit everyday...they see the innocent destroyed...they see horrific things that you can't even imagine.....

Cops and Fireman have some of the highest suicide rates, alcoholic and drug rates and it has to do with not having balance in their lives and not lettting steam off in the right way...if the right way is gallows humor to deal with the horror I am okay with that....

Palin is just fucking stupid, she knew what was going on and didn't move where the interview was being conducted...she had to be in front of the camara...

82. The turkey was probably dead long before the guy pulled it out
the whole purpose of killing them that way is to bleed them out as completely as possible.

Which admittedly sounds brutal, but not so much after you have seen the video.

Nothing I hadn't seen before, growing up around chickens (same killing process more or less) but it still seems a bit much to do it on live TV, presumably without a warning.

The guy in the background feeding those turkeys head-first into a wood-chipper like device is gruesome. Perhaps it is a humane way to kill them, I don't know.

84. It's not really anything like a wood chipper, just a funnel
Pardon the graphic description here, but this is what happens in the video.....

The turkey is placed upside down in the funnel with its head coming out of the hole in the bottom. The scary looking redneck guy cuts the turkey's throat and it bleeds to death. You may notice that the guy was holding the bird's feet, because otherwise it would have been thrashing around, and .....well let's just say the video could have been even more disturbing than it was, had that been the case.

As far as humane.... That's as about as humane as it gets for an animal that someone's going to eat. Obviously they can't gas them or inject them with chemicals.

I spent my early childhood on a farm and watched my grandmother behead many a chicken, so I'm not particularly squeamish about this, but I can't believe Sarah wouldn't realize how this might look to people who don't share that background. Totally clueless, that one. Maybe the cameraman set it up that way on purpose to make a point. Maybe he's not a fan. :)

Edited on Thu Nov-20-08 09:28 PM by political_Dem
Like I said earlier in the thread, she stood there and didn't flinch while this man was killing turkeys. It is quite disturbing that she is openly flaunting her desensitization of the extinguishing of another life. What is worse, it makes the "pardoning" of another turkey's life seem rather vulgar and pretty cheap.

But then again, this clip goes down as one of many demonstrations of why America is quite a violent society.

I've been a vegetarian for over seven years and haven't looked back. And now, whenever I think of meat, I'll look back on that gruesome sight: Sarah Palin doing an interview.

36. I've been asking myself the same question.
There is a national tradition when it comes to the Presidency. I don't know if it is the same for Governors or other public officials.

Just like the national media will cover it when Chimpy pardons a turkey. Except he'll at least have the sense to NOT do so at the fucking slaughterhouse!

Here's a memorable photo from a past "Chimp pardons Turkey" episode.....

Is her eldest son named Striker Force? She mentioned something about her son Striker Force being in Iraq. And glad to hear that Trig is a-ok.

48. Ok that was fucking hilarious

I mean all I could think of was that if I was the Turkey and had to listen to that shrill sing songy voice I would have declined the pardon and jumped in the machine.

If you listen to what she said she said that it was good to get away from the grind and do something with 'levity', everything on the trail was a "blast".

I didn't find it the gross out I thought it would but you have to be seriously fucked up if you think that it approaches 'levity'.

Of course I don't think that is the word that she really wanted but she has this habit of speaking and then about every 8th or 9th word search for a word and put in something that it really doesn't fit. She pauses in the middle of the sentence and has this grimmace as she does her little word search, sometimes she will just come out and say "ah you know" lol.

I hate seeing animals killed, should be a vegetarian but am not, but I didn't find the turkey killing the gross out others did on this thread, I just found her in this weird detached surrealistic ah well ah well you know lol.

Christ, this is what the guy does for at least part of the year to make a living.

I got the same impression as you. He generally went about his business and when he looked back it seemed more like "geez, are they still filming?" vs. any "huck, huck, here I am on the video box, yeppers.". He seemed to go out of the way to make sure the goriest part wasn't captured directly on camera.

a huge fuck you just in time for Thanksgiving. Give us wimps something to think about as we prepare our feasts for the holiday.

It was planned to look as it did, I can't not believe this is what she wanted. Her chatting away happily. Turkey slaughter in the background with a sadistic looking dimwit holding the knife while chewing his whatevers...

She knew this interview would escape Alaska and make a beeline straight for the lower 48.

Sarah Palin's idea of the old shock and awe!

119. Did'nt know what it was at the time
In 1967 was a student at WSU in Pullman WA. Was invited to the "First Fruits" festival at the Nez Perce reservation at Lapwai, ID. It was served along with buffalo, antelope, deer, bear etc. No normally part of the Nez Perce diet, but not uncommon in the depths of winter when other game was scarce. Thats was how it was explained to me by one of the Nez Perce attendees.

I grew up on a farm and I know how Babe is "prepared." I'm talking about "the neighbors get together and all help out" kind of thing.

That said, I think Palin is a psychopath, a sociopath, into S&M or something. That isn't funny even if you are trying to gross people out.
