1. It would be nice and NYers would love him, but
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 04:13 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
that's just not right or fair. Give a non-Clinton a chance!

ETA: Personally I would love for Al Sharpton to be in the Senate! :hide:

11. Won't happen for this reason (for one):

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2008/11/14/2008-11-14_al_sharpton_got_500g_in_illegal_cash_dur.html

The Rev. Al Sharpton raked in $500,000 in illegal campaign contributions during his 2004 White House run, a Federal Election Commission audit found.

The audit focused on Sharpton's use of his American Express card to pay for campaign activity and the apparent use of money from his nonprofit National Action Network to underwrite political expenses.

The FEC audit found Sharpton owes the U.S. Treasury nearly $487,000 in "prohibited" contributions and collected $10,500 in donations above legal limits.

The commission also said the campaign "materially misstated" its financial activity, including not figuring in $100,000 Sharpton received in federal campaign matching funds. Officials said he didn't qualify for matching funds because he didn't abide by campaign rules.

2. I would love to see Bill Clinton in the senate...
but it's not going to happen. He wouldn't want the job even if it were offered.

12. Historically, that bodes badly for the seat.
Donald Russell and Wendell Anderson - two men who appointed themselves to the Senate and got dumped immediately by voters who resented the move.

13. Actually, it's a sign that the governor is going to get dumped anyway in the next election.
It may happen in Texas if it doesn't in New York.

20. Well, there is precedent...
of an ex-president returning to congress. John Q. Adams returned to the house 2 years after his tenure.

9. Really? How come?
Not a challenge but a serious question. What is it that he can't do if she's SoS? Doesn't most of his income come from the lecture circuit and consultant work? Is he constrained from working in some ways for foreign companies perhaps? Never heard that, but might make sense.

14. It's a conflct of interest when your spouse gets payments from a foreign government and you're SOS.

17. Makes sense, but....
How much does Bill make from governments though? I thought most of his foreign irons in the fire were for companies and trade orgs etc?

19. I take it that that is why there is a delay in moving forward. All of this is being checked out.

15. Wish Bill could, Rudy threatening to run for governor
Bill would kick Rudy's ass. Can Paterson appoint himself to the Senate? He'd make a great senator.

18. If he could I agree
Let Bill run for governor to replace him. Christ knows we need somebody who can push changes through legislative feetdraggers and obstacle builders in this state!
