2. I wondered the same thing

I've heard mama bears in captivity will sometimes abandon offspring for unknown reasons... I think that's what happened with that polar bear in Germany. I wonder if that happens in the big cats too?

5. Rare animals are often fed by humans, in case their mother might injure or neglect them
and in the wild, usually only one cub survives, so maybe they thought it best to be safe.. or maybe this Mom rejected them.. A female animal raised in captivity, may lack the mothering skills..

could be one of many reasons..

I bottle fed TWO litters of kittens, when the Mom just "dropped" them all over the yard..still in their sacs.. The second litter (5 kittens each litter), she actually cleaned them up and appeared to be interested, but I still stole them from her on the first day, and bottle fed them, so I would not have wild baby cats to try and catch.. We finally managed to catch her & get her spayed, but she would NOT adapt to indoor living..never even let us NEAR her, after a month of trying

8. Two of our little ferals abandoned by Momma Cat
They were the largest of the five in the litter, and I think Momma didn't have enough milk for all of them. She knew that if she brought them to us we would take care of them.

I bottle fed them until a week, ten days ago. We found homes for the other three kittens.

7. May just be supplemental feeding
With endangered species I would think they are trying their best to make sure that all three kits survive.
