6. he would be a good executive
he certainly doesn't have the direct communication skills obama does, but he's savvy and able.

i'd also really like corey booker to run at some point.

which ever way it goes, i think our bench is deeper than the republicans'

everyone on that list with the exception of Michelle Obama and Napolitano were primary candidates alerady in 2004 or 2008 or both.

Eight years is a long time, and could any of you have guessed back in 2000 that Obama would be the 2008 nominee turned President? DId anyone outside of IL even know who Obama was? It's a long time to find a rising star in the patry.

28. More to the point, 8 years ago few had even heard of Obama
And in 1984 who (outside of Arkansas) knew who Bill Clinton was?

Trying to pick a nominee for 8 years from now? Absolutely pointless.

A lot could happen between now and then. And hopefully most of it will be a good direction for this country, and for the Democratic party.

this point in the game.

Chronological age will dim the likelihood of nomination for several people we think of now as presidential.

I love the idea of Obama having 8 years -- for many reasons -- not least because 8 years of policy redirection and judicial appointments augurs well for coming generations. I've been so ashamed of the past 8 years in my country that I would be exalted to have Obama conduct our government for the next 8.

There are some truly excellent public servants in our ranks who are not as well-known now but by the second Obama administration may play more visible national roles. Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz. Chris Van Hollen. Soon-to-be Mayor of Indianapolis (I hope) Joe Hogsett.

Gov. Schweitzer will still be in zone and would be a formidable candidate against any Republican.

There is the account of one of those very rural under-populated regions of Montana which graduated only one senior from its school district, and Gov. Schweitzer showed up to deliver the commncement address to that one student.

Mont. gov. speaks at commencement for class of one
Sat May 17, 9:46 PM ET

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Jeff Greenwood is in a class by himself.

He was the only student to graduate from Opheim High School this year, but the small event Friday drew a big name. Gov. Brian Schweitzer gave the commencement address.

Greenwood, who plans to attend Dickinson State University in North Dakota, said the high school is the "hub of activity" for rural Opheim, a town about 10 miles south of the Canadian border.

"The student-to-teacher ratio is pretty good," said Greenwood, who is the student body president and, of course, the senior class president.

Greenwood had a few classmates before high school, but his last remaining classmate moved to Utah during freshman year. He took some classes alone his senior year while sharing others with juniors at the school.

"You get to know everybody and you're friends with everybody," Greenwood said. "At the same time, you can't get away with anything."

Principal LeRoy Nelson, who has also been school superintendent, said he thought this was the first time the school graduated just one student. Six students graduated last year and 12 are on track to graduate in 2009.

Nelson said he thinks single-member classes will become more common as enrollment drops at rural schools. Last year, one other Montana school had one graduate. Schweitzer spoke there as well.

That really struck me hard in a very good way.

27. Probably someone not yet on the radar screen
Biden won't be running (I think), and neither will Hillary, so it will be the second
open season since 2008. I think it will be some new emerging young dynamic type. It
certainly hasn't worked out too badly thus far for us. Maybe a more seasoned Patrick
Murphy, or even a Gabrielle Giffords, or someone like that. I still dream of Howard
Dean and/or Al Gore, but they'll both be near 70 by then--not a disqualification, but
not a great place to start from, either, especially if Obama does well.

Of course, maybe the country will go totally media-hyper, and the race will be between
Sarah Palin and Rachel Maddow. Who knows? How many of us would have predicted a President
Obama eight years ago?

31. How many here even heard the name "Obama" in 2000?
(Many may not have even heard the name "Kerry" at that point - and most thought Gore, Lieberman or HRC - the names that Tim Russert listed to Kerry as the frontrunners in a DEC 2002 MTP.)

Who knows? One of the now not well known first or second term Senators or a Governow could do something impressive and win an open primary. Or Joe Biden could run.

32. Of the mentioned names....
Senator Clinton - not likely. Probably too far up in age to try again. Not impossible, but I don't see it being very likely.

Governor Richardson - a possibility and a good candidate, but also a long shot.

VP Biden - Age works against him here, he'll be 73 at his inauguration. We'll see how two terms as VP work for him, before I say yes or no.

Governor Dean - Long shot but not impossible. Age works against him, but his record is already impressive. I figure he's going to run for the Senate someday soon, too.

General Clark - Would be a highly impressive candidate - 34 years in the military, SACEUR, Degree from Oxford, valedictorian at West Point - but age is against him and he lacks experience.

First Lady Obama - WAY out there, but again not an impossibility. Age is not a concern - she'll be 52 when running for President. She's a good speak and a helluva woman in general.

Representative Kucinich - Not a chance. He's bad at fundrasing, doesn't compromise easily and is way out to the left. Unless the USA goes hard left over the next eight years, he hasn't got a chance.

Senator Edwards - Not likely but not impossible. He has a reputation to clean up before then, though.

Governor Napolitano - A very serious potential candidate. I hope she gets a role in the Obama administration. Has done well as governor. Age doesn't work against her, either.
