Here is a really great civic literacy test to see how you are doing...
Only 33 multiple choice questions, most citizens and students should do pretty well on it.

http://www.americancivicliteracy.org/resources/quiz.aspx

Also gives you the correct answers after scoring for those questions you missed plus info about how people scored across the country. No registration is necessary.

6. same score here
out of school about the same amount of time too, at least high school. But on the brighter side we both did far better than most government employees.

3. Everyone on my blog has been taking it
http://www.correntewire.com/content/how-much-do-you-know-about-american-civics-could-you-pass-exam

Some have noted that the group behind it is right-leaning, and certain "correct" answers might lean that way as well. I didn't see a lot of bias, myself.

9. Some of the questions are right off the citizenship exam...
so they are pretty much basic questions.

I didn't post my score: 29/33 for 87.88%.

My 27 year old son, now living at home and not a political animal managed 25/33 for 77.?%. I would imagine that much of the population will fall below 50%.

Might be interesting, if you have junior high or high school teacher friends, to alert them to the test to see how they do.

"George W. Bush: great president or the greatest president?" :)

No, seriously, the quiz is well worth taking.

I forget what came after the decimal point. But the SECOND time I got 100% Apparently you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Did you see the comparisons of scores by citizens to scores by elected officials? In almost all categories they are significantly LOWER.

8. Weird quiz -- and it's wrong about question 9
The Federal government has 2 of the listed powers.

Also, the questions about "free markets" should be prefaced, "According to the Chicago school of economic thought..."

32 out of 33; but only because they're wrong about #9.

29. Poorly worded question, I agree.
The Feds have the power to do all four of the listed actions. The States have the power to do three of the four.

In order to limit the possible correct answers to one, I rephrased the first part of the question to "Under Our Constitution, some powers are reserved to the federal government".

20. Another answer is more correct
The first answer is more correct. It correctly states the relationship between spending and revenues.

The "correct" answer, the one you chose, is flawed. It failed to include the words "on average," and was therefore less correct than the first answer, which was entirely correct. As written, the answer considered correct is wrong. It's not the same tax and spending for everyone. It varies among the class, and only AVERAGES being equal.

21. No it's not.
Even if the government matches spending with revenues, it can still have a debt that's accrued from previous years.

Of course government can have a debt it carries forward, but the statement was true as written.

You're just defending your answer, which I understand.

23. LOL! No it isn't!
Obviously I went through a thought process before I chose the answer. And I considered both answers before eliminating the first one. I'm telling you why the first answer is incorrect.

You cannot say that "government debt is zero" simply because taxes equal government spending. There is a difference between government debt and a government deficit.

In that situation government deficit certainly is zero. But not necessarily government debt. You drew an unwarranted inference.

I used an extra exclamation point, so I'm right.

Are you always this childish?

Next you'll be telling me Mao wasn't a murderous sociopath who killed forty million Chinese.

26. I've given you a pretty iron-clad explanation why the first answer is incorrect
And it went well beyond exclamation marks.

Speaking of childish, I thought this quote of yours was pretty childish:

"You're just defending your answer, which I understand."

I cannot believe you're a middle aged man. Grow up.

Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 08:09 PM by TexasObserver
Since you think you're an authority on the topic at hand, why can't you accept that I understand the history of your country better than you? I know what Mao was really like. You don't. As I've indicated, he slaughtered millions of his own people and installed a despotic regime that endures.

Doesn't that suggest your knowledge isn't as complete as you like to pretend it is?

I've read and rejected your argument.

30. No. I'm accustomed to someone with a different opinon
making a rational argument. I guess you missed class the day that was covered.

You also must have skipped class the day they explained the difference between the budget deficit and the national debt.

You just learned something. Embrace it instead of fighting it.

33. You're pathetic
It's hilarious watching you overreact to getting one question wrong on a ridiculous civics exam. Of course, there must be something wrong with the question and correct answer b/c *you* got it wrong.

When someone kindly attempts to explain why there's nothing wrong with the question and correct answer, you resort to ad hominem and bring up all kinds of wild charges--calling me names and attempting to deflect from the topic at hand. Your comments don't make the logic of your position any less flawed and deep down you know that.

What a sad object lesson in hubris you are.

I'm American, btw. Born and raised.

The test was a mix of things you should know from social studies, and things the group pushing this test wants to accept from economics. I found it suspect.
