Enough with Sarah "Chauncey Gardiner" Palin

The main difference between Sarah Palin and Being There's Chauncey Gardiner is that one can understand how the mutterings of Mr. "Gardiner" could be mistaken for deep parables regarding the economy and other subjects. Palins mutterings are just that, the incoherent mutterings of an uncurious mind.

When we Democrats say that, the rest of you had better listen. We tried to warn everyone about George W. Bush's lack of cognitive abilities and look how he is about to leave the country.

Now it looks like we have to be subjected to being Palin-ized on Oprah, Letterman, Leno and the "Daily Show". http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/22/palin.popularity.oprah.ap/index.html It's the Jerzy Kosinski novel brought to life with the merry minstrels of talk television pulling out all the stops to provide the feeble-minded Palin with their imprimatur of acceptability. People with cutesy talk and small minds ought to be relegated to public access channels, not the major networks, you betcha.

Palin is considering about 800 requests for appearances from December through 2009, with 75 percent coming from out of state. A year ago, just a sprinkle of requests came from beyond Alaska's borders. They range from invitations to speak at the Chief Executives' Club of Boston, Massachusetts, and to attend a 5-year-old's birthday party, from a prayer breakfast in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to a business conference in Britain.

A better and simultaneously more horrific example of life imitating art (and in this case, art intended to be satire) I cannot imagine. As Roger Ebert opined in his analysis of Being There, it "argues that if you look right, sound right, speak in platitudes and have powerful friends, you can go far in our society." I cannot think of a more apt way to describe the rise of Sarah Palin. Is this who we want to be as a people? Isn't it time to evolve beyond elevating cutesy sounding dolts to positions of importance?

The comparison is good--but then, Being There was a satirical novel about politics, so it's no surprise. :rofl:
