7. I say "puh-roo", but that's not right. "Pay-roo" is closer to being correct than what I say.
Shouldn't he be rolling the r a little bit, though?

9. From the lips of a Peruvian or other native speaker of Spanish or Portuguese,
It would be closer to "Peh doo", with a very soft "d", not the hard "r" sound in "roo".

Many americans are incapable of making their mouth make the proper sound so it comes out Pay Roo.

Also, a little more accent on the "roo", not on the "pay".

Practice, you can do it!

Ahh, Peru!

11. This is correct.
My father-in-law is Peruvian.

Your written explanation is the best thus far.

12. I don't understand why you're mentioning "doo" in any aspect
of the Spanish word, "Peru."

One would "roll" the "r" but how does that come out as, or even close to "doo?"

18. The position of the tongue (but not the sound) is similar to the "d" position.
And it is almost but not quite the rolling r sound, again with the tongue touching the front of the palate.

The r sound keeps the tongue back and down.

Obama has changed the way we say Pakistan "POK-ee-STON"

and even Chile "Chee-lay"

So why then, in his Youtube address week before last, when he said Australia he said the Americanized version of it and not "oh-SRTAYL-yuh"?

ha ha, he's so cute

Edited on Mon Nov-24-08 11:59 AM by CLW
English speakers, should simply say "Purr-roo" and leave it at that. Chimpy's attempt at authenticity is just another example of his good ole boy BS at work.
