Will Obama sign the Employee Free Choice Act into law, or will his overlord Larry Summers say no?
:sarcasm:

But really, does anyone see EFCA passing in the next four years now that the economy is so screwed? I doubt neoliberals like Geithner and Summers support the bill, and the rightwing will portray any pro-labor legislation as 'bad for the economy.' I hope Obama takes some initiative with this thing, and begins to understand just exactly who voted for him in places like Pennsylvania and Ohio.

2. He better
I think he will sign it if it lands on his desk, but the question is how hard he will fight for it. The unions have a pretty strong program in place to hold members of Congress accountable, but it sure would help to have a president who helped keep senators in line, especially the ones from Arkansas. The question is how hard Obama will push for it. I have no doubt that he will sign it if it's on his desk but I hope he expends some political capital to help get it there.

5. Agreed. The real battle is getting it to his desk.
There's a bunch of Blue Dog democrats that are going to be real dicks about this.

I do grow uneasy at Obama essentially buying into some conservative economic dogma wrt delaying the repeal of the Bush tax cut. And Summers influence is certainly not good.

All in all, I do not like the chances for EFCA at all.

But I'm a pessimist.

3. I don't think Obama is crazy
He can't be for a bill before he was against it. He's a co-sponsor and promised a shit load of union leaders he would sign in. If he doesn't the unions will go batshit and that's pretty much it after that.

6. He's got to sign that. Not so much because of his union support
But because he obviously believes strongly in it himself

7. The fact that he hasn't made it law yet means his presidency is already a failure
I mean, why wait till inauguration, he should start now, dammit, now!

10. I highly doubt it would get past the Senate as proposed now.

12. EFCA will be signed
if it reaches his desk. Its not on his top 5 list right now though, so Congress will have to buck up.

14. I agree with George McGovern... the EFCA is undemocratic and unamerican

Unions are great.... but people should be allowed to vote anonymously as to whether they want to join a union or not.

This is coersion. It is wrong. No matter if the "ends" are good. The ends don't justify the means.

...and this is not a "conservative" position.... George McGovern agrees with me.
