HORRIBLE MARKETING CAMPAIGN BY OBVIOUSLY RACIST PAINT MANUFACTURER!!11!
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 01:27 AM by redstate_democrat

< Obama win inspires White House paint job >

November 13, 2008 | By Brian Dunn

The recent election of Barack Obama as the next president of the United States was an opportunity too good to pass up for Nicolas Massey, creative director at Montreal’s Amen Creation. The victory inspired a new ad for client Cyntech’s Permapaint exterior concrete paint.

His idea was to paint the White House black for a new print ad that includes the copy, “When it’s time for a change”—Obama’s key campaign message—beside a paint roller and the company’s name.

“The idea came to me in a flash right after Obama won the election,” Massey explained. “It’s the kind of opportunity that doesn’t come along very often.”

Asked if he thought the symbolism could be seen as racist, Massey said he was more concerned about using such a well-known institution as the White House in an ad, rather than the fact Obama is black.

“The whole concept is related to the colour of Obama, but it’s also the fact that a different party won the election.”

The ad will appear in Quebec alternative newspapers and specialized trade publications, and may also be used in the rest of Canada and the United States. Amen Media handled the media buy.

EDITED: I honestly didn't view it as a racist ad campaign, but so many posters seem to think so. So I changed the title.

As far as I know we haven't had any albino presidents who would come closet to white

I saw a thread here about what color to paint the white house. I didn't open it. Maybe it wasn't as bad as it felt to me just reading the subject line but I found even the topic offensive.

21. Wow. Sometimes things aren't that serious.
The article emphasizes that it's not just about his color, but about a "change" coming to the White House. Therefore, the White House needs new paint. It's an ad for a paint company.

I don't think this ad was produced with the same intent as the other crap you're talking about. Motive does matter.

I thought it was somewhat clever that a paint company would do this and then have the tag line "When it's time for a change", using Obama's motto.

Ahh, but whatever. This is apparently not the site for this kind of conversation.

It's pretty obvious they are talking about painting the white house black because a black man is President. If they were just talking about change, they would have picked a different color. Sorry, but how can you not see the mindset behind it regardless of what they say in some bullshit article about it?

had a lot of the experiences that some of us have. I'm black and I was immediately offended. I am filled with pride at the election of the first African American president but If you notice when he ran for this office race was rarely mentioned. Actually it wasn't until all the rev. wright crap started. I hate to see people always pointing out his ethnicity. He's president of the United States...not of black people and everything black. That picture reminded me of all the watermelon patch as opposed to rose gardens at the white house jokes etc. That stuff is done out of sheer racism and a constant reminder to all that he's black. The paint company people didn't need to use black to show off their color collection. Think about it.

61. Redstate. I don't know what your original title was, but...
I don't know why you would change the title to "HORRIBLE MARKETING CAMPAIGN BY OBVIOUSLY RACIST PAINT MANUFACTURER!!11!" when you originally didn't see it that way. I don't know why you would let people on this message board make you change your title and/or what you originally believed, stated. Anyway I don't believe the man responsible for the advertisement meant it to be discriminatory in nature. After reading the article I didn't find anything racists about the ad. I think the ad was in poor taste, but not racist.

84. You need to wake up.
People will say (or write) anything to explain away their real mindset. "I read the article, and they said they weren't racist so, like, uh..."

please. :eyes:

62. Racist? No. Offensive? No. Ill-conceived anyway? You betcha...
Ill-conceived because people will find any reason to be offended, and this company should have known that.

71. If they think making the White House look like someone puked on it
is going to sell paint, they're in for a surprise. The ad agency should be fired. And while I'm at it, the Mucinex ad agency also needs to be fired for their cartoon lugies (or is it loogies?). Their ads make me nauseated. Who wants to dwell on dancing, green phlegm?

73. Read the copy--the creator goty the idea in a "flash' when he knew Obama was elected.
Of all the things my overseas friends were thinking about when the news came to them, repainting the WH was not one of them.

So I'm uptight; I don't care. It's offensive to ME. When it comes to effective advertising, that's all that matters--that's how advertising works.

80. In Guilford, CT, there is a house known as the Black House
During the 1790s a refugee from the French Revolution lived there. He painted the house black in mourning after the execution of Louis XVI.

82. What a pig.
If he wanted to take advantage of Obama's election and create an effective campaign, he would have a rainbow-colored White House in the ad.

Probably not aware of the joke that's going around.

87. It's ridiculous.

So he's rationalizing the black paint job under
the concept of "the colour of Obama" and that " a different party won the election"?

What would he have done if Hillary had been nominated and won?

Painted breasts on the WH?

That seems to be his line of thinking.
