2. I remember that very well.
(snip)

"It's unbelievable. What more can I say?" So huffed one member of Rosalynn Carter's staff last week, describing Nancy Reagan's eagerness to get 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue fixed up to her tastes. It was not just that the incoming First Lady had toured the White House with the man who is evidently to be the First Decorator, Los Angeles Interior Designer Ted Graber. At a Georgetown party, she told a Carter aide that when she and her husband leave the mansion, as her "legacy" they will move before Inauguration Day, to give their successors an early start on revamping the family quarters. Not surprisingly, and despite denials by Reagan spokesmen, Carter partisans took that as a startling hint for Jimmy and Rosalynn to consider clearing out well before Jan. 20. As it was, the new Administration seemed to be as intent on redecorating as on Cabinetmaking. Reagan aides traipsed in and out of the White House's working areas to size up office space. Tape measure in hand, Graber personally spent two days poring over the living quarters, including the Carters' bedroom. Carter people, who have been rather stung by all the press commentary on the "style" that the Reagans might restore to the capital; snickered gleefully that all the newcomers would bring was "Beverly Hills class." Few other First Families have plunged into redecoration right away. One of the first things the Kennedys intended to do was convert a bedroom to a private dining room, but they did not get around to it for months.

25. I'm not surprised.
I was in high school at that time & don't remember that, but I'm not surprised. I couldn't stand skinny, bloodless, talentless Nancy Reagan when I began paying attention to politics.

3. I remember seeing a news clip of a reporter informing Rosalynn that Nancy had floated that idea.
Rosalynn was speechless and her facial expression showed that she was aghast. Also, I think that I remember Nancy denying that she had ever floated the idea in the first place.

Thanks for the reminder.

Ugly. And totally a metaphor for what it's all about to republicans. A grand old party. Sickness.

advance her meager little career. The epitome of a social climber married to another "B" movie actor, who was the epitome of a political climber. She sucked dick. He sucked wind. Go figure.

10. Nancy was the most unpopular first lady in recent times.
Michele already has some strikes against her, and needs some work on her own image.

What you suggest would be a big mistake and I think you know that!

22. What strikes? And what kind of image do you want?
another brain-dead doormat like Laura? Michelle has done absolutely nothing wrong in the last 2 years. She's been a stunning example of a modern successful woman, mother, wife and daughter. Anybody who thinks she needs to "work on her own image" needs to shut off Fox News.

16. And yet if you read Nancy's memoirs
Which, sadly, I have, you will find Nancy places all the blame on Rosalyn Carter for being ungrateful and stand-offish during the transition period.

Should't surprise me that she wants to rewrite history -her husband always did

That woman was not quite but almost as hated by the media as Hillary.

Big difference in that Nancy earned it.

19. Nancy was not loved at all back then. Somehow she seems more humble today.
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 11:57 PM by Jennicut
But back then she rhymed with witch and I knew it as just an elementary school kid. "Just Say No" to drugs was her big mantra back then and I remember, being a child of the 80's of course, having a whole assembly about it and getting t-shirts saying "Just Say No" on them....maybe I still have it somewhere from circa 1983.

20. I felt really sorry for you guys.
I am always amazed and grateful when I see kids of the 80's turned out to be decent and productive human beings. The Reagan era of greed and corruption in nearly every corner of America didn't make it easy for you all.

23. Funny thing is, I bet Laura wouldn't even mind that much.
I bet she can't WAIT to get herself a nice condo in Dallas or wherever, with lots of peace and quiet, and no more need to cover up for the brain-dead frat boy she's been saddled with. I bet she'd change her name and buy herself a new face to start all over if she could. As it is, though, too much tabloid attention. As long as she has a room of her own and her Xanax prescription continued, though, she'll deal.

26. I always thought Laura Bush hated public life.
I get the impression she would have gladly gone back to Texas at any time over these last 8 years. Now she can. Hell, I'd be on Xanax too if I were her.
