Obama wants to make White House 'green'

By SARA KUGLER
Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO (AP) -- President-elect Barack Obama says he wants to make the White House "green." In an interview with Barbara Walters, Obama said he plans to sit down with the chief usher for the presidential mansion and do an evaluation of its energy efficiency.

He says part of what he wants to do is show the American people that it's not that hard to go green.

Asked whether he'll be tiptoeing around at night, turning off the lights, Obama said he isn't going to be obsessive about it.

He says he doesn't do that now where he lives and there's no reason to do that in his new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

ABC provided excerpts of the interview, which airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. EST.

12. Actually, when Carter was President, he had solar panels installed on the
White House roof, and when Reagan moved in, he promptly had them torn off.

2. I was shocked to read on DU
the other day to read that Reagan tore down the solar panels that Carter had installed on the roof of the White House.

I hope Obama puts them back up.

4. I remember that from childhood.
It really signaled the coming of the 80's total "I got mine" philosophy. :( I hope Obama puts them back up, too. It would be really symbolic on a number of levels.

5. This makes me so HAPPY!!! That first Earth Day was so inspiring...
...it's been heartbreaking to see Republicans try to undo every good thing we do for the earth ~ starting with Reagan removing Carter's solar panels.

I may turn out the lights in the White House chandeliers but I am determined that no one will turn out the lights of the REA in the farmhouses of Louisiana.

I know that some of you were first against my policy about turning out lights in the White House until you found out that we were serviced over there by private power and then you regarded that as a step in the right direction.

10. he can update the roof with solar shingles, which are tres chic and green
I hope they eventually change the heating/air system over to Geo thermal because it's so clean and green. Healthy air and I want the Obamas to be in prime health! Some cork flooring instead of carpet would be great for his back and more healthy than carpet...and it is really pretty, too.

I'm into green building, so I guess I could go on and on -- but I can't wait to see what they do and I like his attitude about it.
