Covering Barack: The New Yorker Vets the President-Elect

Barry Blitt, the cartoonist responsible for the New Yorker's controversial terrorist fist-jabbing cover, among others, returns this week to "vet" Barack Obama. Of course this time around "Vetting" refers to the all important decision of picking a "first" puppy — thus far we know they want a mutt, but that it needs to be hypoallergenic and won't be a girly dog. The cover may not be all that far off the mark, actually, turns out the original meaning of the word "vetting" was to to "submit an animal to examination by a veterinarian."

5. I think this is the New Yorker saying . . .
"Sure you hated the other cover, but we're going to keep doing them . . . some you'll like, some you won't."

6. From the adoring look on the face of that spaniel
looking up at President-Elect Obama, I'd guess that the spaniel would be a shoo-in. I sure couldn't turn him away.

11. i want them all!
How does someone choose a dog? They are all so precious!

it's going to be an interesting choice. I believe the allergen is dog dander, which all dogs have. I'm not sure how a dog is classified as hypoallergenic. It may have to do with shedding, I think. They may need to foster a dog for a few weeks to make sure he/she does not cause problems for Melia.

12. Dog hair is safe, dog fur is allergenic.
So poodles are safe, Golden Retreivers aren't.

And, I want them all too!

21. a fascinating list, thank you!
I had not heard of some of the breeds and crosses listed, and it was interesting to look them up.

The Native American Indian Dog really captured my imagination; they are stunning, and have a rich history as companion dogs for Native Americans. I love them!
