IF Senator Reid were a great leader |
|
He would keep the Senate in session right through Christmas and make the slash and burn Repukes have to talk and talk. This "gentleman's filibuster crap needs to stop.

8. It just seems too easy for these people, even Barbara whom I love, |

to say "change is on the way" while people are having trouble feeding their kids.
It's not enough. They all start sounding like white noise. And they, even people as good as Barbara and Dick Durbin, should know that.

11. I agree. BRING IN THE COTS. And while others might BE WITH their families on |
|
Christmas it won't be a pleasant one, worrying about lost jobs and unaffordable bills.
I think the Senate can sacrifice and I have little doubt it would end their shenanigans very quickly.

I'm not sure if it would have made a difference, but the issue is too big to not at least try.

voted on by the Senate.
The onus is on the majority to invoke cloture, and the only way to do that is with either 60+ votes or unanimous consent.
All the filibustering party must do is prevent 60 votes, they need not "talk all day and night" or anything like that.
Sometimes the votes just aren't there.

18. Nice, clear way of stating this |
|
In fact, they do not even have to be there - because the party that wants to move to a vote needs to get 60 votes - even 59 to 0 doesn't work. All Reid could do is to continue to call for more cloture votes - making the Democrats and Republicans willing to vote for it come in to vote. That he said it was dead for the year means he knows there are at least 40 Senators of the 99 Senators who can not be moved to vote for it.

Let those filibustering, cowardly GOPers know what it will be like for the people they put out of work.

If someone on Obama's team reads DU. Please convince Obama to call Harry Reid and tell him to keep his ass there in Washington. We have no President in Washington. His party ignores him. Reid dare not ignore Barack Obama.

17. Harry Reid has ZERO sense of staging. He's clueless. |

Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 09:01 AM by TexasObserver
First you build up the tension, the awareness of the vote. You start some fights. You bring it to a vote. You force the other side to filibuster. You make them publicly and loudly own their position, and you make sure the public knkows the GOP position is "thumbs down."
You make them the Grinch that is stealing Christmas.
You don't make it easy for the GOP and then just shrug and walk away.
We have had some great majority leaders for our party, leaders who understood how to get things passed, how to frame issues. Harry Reid is not just bad, he's horrible. How he ever got any leadership position is a mystery.
