As much as I can't stand the circular firing squad, I can understand why people are feeling how they |
|
are feeling. The LGBT people I know feel extremely betrayed by the choice of Warren to speak at the inauguration. These aren't anti-Obama people or PUMAs. These are Obama supporters who are sad and hurt. Warren made some very divisive comments about same-sex marriage and was a hardcore Prop 8 supporter.
At the same time, I can understand why people are upset by the anti-Obama sentiment on DU. Obama has been attacked for pretty much everything that he has done long before he made the Warren pick, and anybody who knows me knows how much I hate it when progressives eat their own. I think what's happening is that some DUers are seeing posts criticizing Obama, remembering the PUMAs and trolls from election time, and reacting to that while not realizing that some of these posters are pro-Obama people who are genuinely hurt. There could be PUMAs and trolls capitalizing on the controversy, and these people should be ashamed of themselves, but we can't assume every post criticizing Obama is from one of those groups.
My position on this whole controversy is that I oppose the Warren pick due to his Prop 8/anti-gay-rights statements, but I'm still an Obama supporter. I still think he will be a great President. However, I can understand why some people are angry right now. I just don't want to see the progressive movement ripped apart by this.

3. Not to mention all the women who should be opposed to Warren |

and his idea that women can't run their own lives.

a cold hard look at how Obama is catering to someone who methodically works against women's rights and gay rights.

11. So ask Michelle Obama when she plans on divorcing her husband |
|
since some seem to think Obama must endorse each and every position Warren represents - even though he's been very clear that he does not.
She doesn't strike me as someone who would tolerate a husband who worked against rights that would affect her or the future women they're raising. Oh wait, there's no evidence that he's doing that.

12. Oh, wait, he invited him to participate in the inaugural. |
|
And wait some more, because the Obama people now have a big mess on their hands.

4. You are assuming "Progressives" will actually side with GLBT people... |
|
I'm under no illusions, "Progressives" only side with civil rights when its convenient for them. This isn't a circular firing squad because that would mean we are all on the same side, we aren't, that's as plain as day.

13. How can you support Obama and not understand his basic .... |
|
... underlying motivation for everything he does?
That's not to say you shouldn't disagree with him.
I'm just still having a hard time understanding it.
I didn't enjoy seeing him share council with a woman who winked and smiled while throngs of people demanded his murder but I trusted his judgment.
Again, not saying it's wrong to not trust his judgment. I'm just confused.
I know, I know. Bad analogy.
There's gonna be a LOT of hand holding with folks we dont like over the next 8 years. It wont be fun and it wont be easy.
But I think we'll all be better for it.
What if this olive branch actually causes Warren to change his way of thinking? We all saw a lot of things happen this year that we never thought we'd see.
Anything can happen child ..... anything can be.
