Everybody, PLEASE SEE "MILK" over the holidays...
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 02:19 PM by polichick
With this week's Warren controversy, it's important to remember how critical it is for straight Americans to stand beside gays in the fight for equality.

The movie also reminded me of perhaps the first fundie who sold her hatefulness on television with an all-American smile ~ Anita Bryant. As a kid in Florida, my family boycotted orange juice until the growers fired Bryant as their spokeswoman. Gay rights have advanced since then, but there's still a ways to go.

Please see "MILK" for inspiration, and find ways to stand by those of us who are still denied liberty and justice in the United States of America.

(Plus, the movie is great!:))

1. I can't wait to see it
Harvey was a hero to me and I still remember the day he was murdered (and the day his killer got off almost scott-free).

I also remember Anita Bryant. I was 17 when she started her campaign of hatred and I remember the self-doubt I felt when, at an impressionable age, I was told that I was evil, sick, perverted etc. That's what people don't understand about the Warren debate - this is a terrible message that's being sent to gay teens.

5. Kicking.
I saw it last weekend in Alamada. It is a very great film. It is full of win. I was crying at the end and several people in the audience were quietly sobbing a bit, too. It is full of hope and history and if you grew up in the Bay Area in the '70s it is an awesome portrait of a neat place to live.

6. Our audience was in tears too...
Saw it at a small art theater and it was a powerful experience ~ not a dry eye in the house, gay or straight.

17. I think it won NY film critics for BP as well as for Penn and Brolin..
Basically Sean Penn is sweeping the critics awards with Mickey Rourke catching up quickly. It hasn't been winning as many Best Pictures since that's being dominated right now by Slumdog Millionaire and Wall-E.

The SAG nods were just announced yesterday and it was nominate for ensemble, Penn and Brolin.

I assumed it would be released nation-wide.

11. Maybe I'm going crazy, but I recall seeing that many months ago!
How can that be? I swear I saw it. And at home, on tv (cable). Was I the only one?

In any case, it was a fantastic performance by Sean Penn.

13. you probably saw "The Life and Times of Harvey Milk"
a different movie. heard lots of good things about it.

I've seen "Milk" but not "Life and Times".

Milk was very well done. I grew up here in SF but I don't remember hearing about Milk's assassination. I was 7 and all I remember is our teacher showing us the newspaper the next day and saying that Mayor Moscone was shot.

It was just 9 days after the Jonestown deaths (which I don't remember happening at all).

16. I'm so confused!
You mean this one:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001Y4LDW?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=priceg-dvd-20&linkCode=asn

??

That's not the one, although I do recall seeing it years ago.

No, the one I saw had Sean Penn in it, and I remember being really surprised that it was on cable because I had never even heard of it nor noticed it having been released in theaters, very unusual for a Sean Penn film, right? It was sometime earlier this year.

Maybe I just dreamed it. How bizarre.

15. Great performance by Sean Penn..
I think he's on his way to a second Oscar for this one-- and IMO, his Harvey Milk is a million times better than his Mystic River performance. Although, I currently have him tied with Frank Langella for Best Actor. Penn has a better chance of winning, but I'm still kind of rooting for Langella because he got majorly snubbed last year... though I have not seen The Wrestler or Benjamin Button yet.

And the supporting actors were all great, with the exception of Diego Luno, whom I usually love. James Franco is so adorable too, I hope he gets some recognition this year for two great performances in Milk and Pineapple Express. Josh Brolin didn't have enough screen time, IMO, to beat Heath Ledger or Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting, but he definitely will be nominated especially because he got screwed over last year for No Country for Old Men.

My current top 5 of the year:
1. The Dark Knight
2. Milk
3. Wall-E
4. Frost/Nixon
5. Tropic Thunder

18. I want both Penn and Ledger to win as revenge for Brokeback's Best Picture loss
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 05:59 PM by JohnnieGordon
Also Ledger really deserved it for Best Actor in Brokeback. One of the most powerful performances I've ever seen.

20. Ledger is totally winning, and if he doesn't win, it might be RDJr.
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 06:01 PM by mwei924
Heath Ledger has won just about every award so far, losing one or two to Brolin. I would be very surprised if he lost in the end.

The Best Actor race is heating up now, and the Academy might be a little reluctant to give Penn another Oscar just a few years after his last one. And The Wrestler is getting freakin' unbelievably good reviews with Mickey Rourke catching up in critical prizes. It should be an interesting race this year.

Best Pic and Director, in my view, are probably going to Benjamin Button and David Fincher as long as its reviews hold up strong.
