Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 02:11 PM by Roberto1223
NEW YORK - The founder of a hedge fund that invested with Bernard Madoff has been found dead at his Manhattan office.

A spokeswoman with the New York Medical Examiner says Rene-Thierry Magon de la Villehuchet's death was reported Tuesday.

A French newspaper is reporting that de la Villehuchet committed suicide. The medical examiner spokeswoman says it has not determined the cause of death yet.

2. there will be many, many others to come
when you realize that you're older and that your entire investment is gone and you have no way to live or provide for your own basic needs...what else is left but suicide?

this is why i think such as madoff, bernie ebbers, the enron scammers, etc. should have been or should all be considered for the death penalty, their actions kill, you can't beggar old people who have no way to go back to work and re-gain the money without KNOWING that some of them will be forced into suicide by your actions

4. oh for pete's sake
that is ridiculous. People who think they aren't worth anything unless they've got a pile of money are sick. I bet these people have more money left than I'll ever dream of having - and they call that poverty. I feel bad for their problems, but it's absurd to say they have no choice except suicide.

7. It's not about what YOU think their options are
it's about what THEY think their options are, and I have enough compassion to feel sorry for someone who thought that this was their only remaining option.

9. No. It's about somebody who agreed
that it was justifiable to believe this was their only option. And, did you miss the part where I said I felt bad for them?? Or why did you just choose to ignore that in my comments?

11. Reading the excerpt
This was the founder of a hedge fund. Perhaps knowing that he had participated in the wrecking of his clients lives was more than he could take.

But even without that, you have no idea who is invested in what, or what their personal situations are. Not all investors are rich. Money is just money, but if you have an illness and the money to pay for your health insurance suddenly isn't there, or you can no longer pay for your housing/food, etc, Things can look pretty damn bleak. Especialy if you are later in life, without the drive and energy and personal resources to rebuild a life.

12. Sounds like 75% of my life
But my point was that rationalizing this as a good excuse for suicide doesn't send anybody a useful message. You can lend all the empathy in the world, without giving the impression that anybody should even be thinking of suicide over money, of all things.

5. Madoff Offed?
Saw this coming! Of course the guy was gonna do this. He didn't want to handle the social, emotional or legal consequences.

8. It's sad when anyone takes their own life. I always think about the
families they leave behind. My sister took that route, and the people left behind suffer more than most will ever realize. (hopefully nobody has to realize it)

10. That's what I thought of too
Sometimes mental illness leads people to places that they have absolutely no control over. But money? Ack, it's terrible that anybody would put money over their life and think that their loved ones would rather have them dead. I am so sorry for your loss.
