Judd Gregg to be nominated Monday?
Edited on Sun Feb-01-09 12:07 AM by Cash_thatswhatiwant
I know this is horrible that I'm getting news from them but freerepublic has on their breaking section that he will be nominated monday. their source was Fox News' Geraldo Rivera who announced it on his show.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2175999/posts

i dunno if thats true?

if it is though, that means we'll get a 60 seat majority and filibusterer proof senate as long as shenanigans in MN don't happen.

1. If true, this would only harden efforts against Franken
Huge money will pour in for Coleman's legal defense. Franken may not be seated until 2010.

5. Saw it earlier and too . . .
sickened by the news to post it ---

Not only a Repug --- but a long history of being an elite Repug ---

And I don't think there's any guarantee of Governor appointing a Dem . . . ???

Meanwhile, if I recall this guy correctly, he's still fighting the war on Indians!!

6. Hopefully that gets us to 60
Now Obama just has to keep this joker around for a few months before he finds an excuse to fire him.

7. How did Obama start thinking about him?
Edited on Sun Feb-01-09 12:28 AM by Proud Liberal Dem
:wtf:

Back when I first started watching C-Span I remember watching him in some hearings and he seemed like a real Repuke "tool" to me and definitely NOT a friend to Democrats. This guy seems like a Repuke through and through. I never saw him as a "moderate" like Bill Cohen or anybody that would even want to have anything to do with a Democratic administration. I suppose I could be wrong but reading his profile doesn't make him seem like somebody I would want in an Obama administration. I also have no clue as to his qualification to be Commerce Secretary? I would assume that at least he has served on the Senate Finance Committee or something? It's a good way to pick off another GOP Senator but I'm sure the GOP knows what Obama is trying to do but would keeping him in the Senate be worse than putting him in a cabinet-level position within the Obama administration? I just have to say again:
:wtf:

How likely is it that he would even accept the position?

and insulted, told to stop posting and go away.

I don't like this at all.

Oh, get this, Gregg says he won't vacate his seat unless a republican is appointed to replace him.

15. here is another article that states the governor will probably appoint
a republican.

-snip-

* New Hampshire's Democratic governor, John Lynch, may name a Democrat to replace Gregg, which could give the party 60 seats in the Senate, enough to clear Republican procedural hurdles. But Lynch may appoint a Republican to avoid a backlash about handing Democrats a stranglehold on the Senate.

* If the governor replaces Gregg with a Republican, expect the new senator to be a moderate who ends up frequently voting with Democrats.

14. Gregg has a moderate record on social issues.
From wikipedia:

In June 2006 he joined six of his fellow Republicans in voting against the Federal Marriage Amendment. In April 2007 he was among the breakaway Republicans to support the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. However, his record on the issue of abortion is a solidly pro-life one. Gregg has voted for some gun control measures and against others. He voted against the Brady Bill, but in recent years has voted for trigger control locks on firearms and in favor of the ban on assault weapons.

========

Here are his committe assignments:

Committee on the Budget (Ranking Member)
Committee on Appropriations
Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies
Subcommittee on Defense
Subcommittee on Homeland Security
Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies
Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies
Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs (Ranking Member)
Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions
Subcommittee on Children and Families
Subcommittee on Retirement and Aging

He was also a supporter of the financial bailout in the fall and was the GOP's chief negotiator.

Sounds good enough for me if it means getting another Dem senator. Don't forget, he will now be answering to Obama, not to NH or the GOP.

GOP's Gregg Appears To Be Commerce Pick
By Anne E. Kornblut
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, February 1, 2009; Page A10

President Obama appears set to nominate Republican Sen. Judd Gregg as commerce secretary, a move that could happen in the next day or two, Democratic officials said yesterday.

Gregg (N.H.) acknowledged Friday that he was under consideration. But administration officials took it a step further yesterday, saying he is atop the list to fill the job, and other officials said they thought he was all but certain to be tapped. His nomination and confirmation would give a leading economic role in the Obama Cabinet to a fiscal conservative, while bolstering the president's argument that he has built a truly bipartisan administration.

Two other Republicans -- Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former Illinois congressman, and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, a holdover from the Bush administration -- are already in place in Obama's Cabinet.

Republican officials said they are resigned to Gregg's departure from a critical Senate seat that Democrats had already intended to challenge.

I like it. Comes off as unity, bi-partisan but bottom line we may get 60 seats.
