I have a theory on the Gregg appointment |
|
Walk through this with me. It's just a theory:
1. Obama appoints Gregg to the Commerce job, perhaps this week, but he would noty be likely to resign until after his confirmation which could take a couple of weeks.
2. Meanwhile the stimulus bill is now navigating its way through the Senate.
So...
3. Gregg agrees to vote for the stimulus bill in the Senate, or at least for cloture, which would make a Republican filibuster all that much harder.
4. In exchange for Governor Lynch of New Hampshire appointing a Republican place holder to the seat; someone who would agree not to run in 2010.

1. Yikes!!! We are simple people up here in NH...not used to this intrigue! |
|
You may be right. I heard a theory today that Lynch wants to run for the seat in 2010. Still don't know about Gregg for this slot.

5. If Lynch wants the seat himself, he'd better appoint a Dem or an Indie. |
|
It would be pretty foolish to create a Republican incumbent, despite any assurances they might give about not running themselves.

7. It would be too easy for an incumbent to attack |
|
Lynch if Lynch was to run... "So governor, you made a mistake appointing me?... you said at the time I was the best candidate..."

2. Gov Lynch has a 190% approval rating. He will totally win the seat when he runs |

13. I know of 2 votes Lynch won't get if he appoints a Republican. |
|
Maybe it would be different if Gregg was wildly popular, but Judd knows he's headed for Sununu-ville next election. Taking the Commerce Secretary spot is a smart move on his part. He goes out on top rather than like the loser he will be if he runs again.

3. If Lynch is planning on appointing a Republican then Gregg shouldn't get the job |
|
Simple as that in my opinion. Because there are several Democrats qualified

4. I have a theory too... |

Edited on Sun Feb-01-09 04:31 PM by BlooInBloo
1) Obama knows more than me.
2) Obama is extremely capable.
3) Obama has extremely good intentions.
4) Obama does his homework.
Those certainly don't add up to an "it will work", but it does add up to "if it doesn't work, it won't be because the attempt was stupid".
EDIT: Quotes come in pairs.

9. And add #5 to your list |
|
Obama does actually deeds -- appointing a Republican to his cabinet and not playing politics by having the DEM guv of NH appoint a Repblican -- while the Republicans continue to look like partisan, cry baby obstructionists.

15. Seems to be a negotiation over and exchange of services for a senate seat. |
|
A quid pro quo. A price tag for a political appointment, just not in dollars.
