If only we had Barack Obama.........

These are wacky days. A fortnight ago it seemed like the whole world pitied America because of the cretin in the White House, now the chief line of attack against government leaders from opposition politicians my side of the world is something like: "Listen buddy, you're NO Barack Obama".

I know, I have a seriously bad case of fan-girl-itis, but even I recognise that the task ahead for Obama is enormous and things might not work out, but overnight, almost literally, it's like the rest of the world is just in awe of this articulate, thoughtful, intelligent, charismatic man, and suddenly we're expressing even more dissatisfaction in our own leaders because they just don't compare.

It's just an astonishing turn-around in terms of re-found respect for America. Honestly, from newsreaders to politicians....I'm talking Ireland and Britain specifically....they just kind of purr when they listen to and comment on him. Awe is the only word.

No! It's not a mass outbreak of fan-girl-itis over here, it's just an intense admiration for a man who seems to be approaching the economic crisis (and foreign policy issues) with some thought and care, acknowledging its gravity but, at the same time, going out of his way to reassure the people that it CAN and WILL be overcome.

I was one of 100s who travelled from Ireland to Washington for the inauguration, everyone on my booked-out flight went there to celebrate this amazing piece of history. We're all ginormously depressed by the collapse of our own economy, but as one of my fellow travellers said: "Remember, when America sneezes, the world catches a cold....so maybe when America recovers under Obama, we will too."

Maybe not? But there's no harm in hoping.

Any way, just saying....I know most DUers are intensely proud of the new president, just want to remind you how envious the rest of us are. :-)

9. Truly he is great and could potentially be one of our greatest Presidents ever,

if the DLC keeps their sticky fingers off of him, you gotta admit, someone, anyone who could put together a coherent sentence would look good after Dumbya. But Obama is already so above the rest, in terms of ability to have a coherent, useful thought and then being able to coherently, nay, elegantly, explain it. I know many of us are just in joyful shock. We're watching him carefully, though, because we have two jobs with this President, watch his back and put his feet to the fire. We blew it with President Clinton on both of those accounts and we will not make that mistake again.

I hope and pray the US and the world can recover under Obama. I swear I think if any one person could bring us recovery, it would be him. I just worry that this one may be way to big for any one man, no matter how great. We are all going to have to figure out our place in it and as he has mentioned multiple times, he cannot do it all by himself. We must all work together, even the people who brought us both the Bushes and then thought we might like a Palin on top!

These first weeks have been heady with Obama changing this awful thing and that awful thing and bringing us hope that we may be able to bring the necessary justice to our war criminals, I mean, previous administration. Please don't think that the majority of us want to move on, well we do want to move forward but we know that can't happen without a cleansing. No, our leaders didn't kill 6 million Jews, but we don't even know how many Iraqis have been killed in this war of aggression. The aggressors who behaved dishonorably in the name of America must be held to justice, for we are a nation of laws not of men.

The thing that has given me moments (only the smallest of moments) of sadness since he was elected was realizing that with him being the real deal, someone who came from where most of us came from and truly cares, in a way that will forever elude the Silverspoon Sociopath (man, we had a lot of names for our cretin, didn't we?), is that he will age 20 years in the next eight. It's the ones who really care who age so terribly under the yoke of the Presidency.

As a final note, I hope one day that when Europe sneezes, America catches cold. I want us to take down our mantle of being an Imperialist power. We didn't do it any better than anyone else and in many ways we were much worse. It wouldn't be so bad to step in beside Canada as an amiable cousin to the world. Would you take us like that? I would really like that.

...like he was; immature as a leader and people saw the need for competence and morality (not religious morals) in government.
