You made that up to justify a narky response to what was intended to be a light-hearted post (seriously!) ribbing the description of the SuperBowl as the 'World Championship' when it's actually just the American Championship for, eh, American football.

Why not have the Steelers play their Grey Cup champion?? Also "World Series"?? WTF?? There are other baseball leagues in Japan, Korea and Central America. Why not get together and decide once and for all a true world baseball championship.
Soccer's World Cup is probably the only sport that holds a true "World Championship".

of calling oneselves "World Champions" when all they've done is win a league championship of American Football. BTW, wouldn't a sport played with the foot be properly called "football"?? We are the only country on earth to call it something else aka "soccer" a corruption of "Association Football". The only time American Football is played with the foot is during kickoffs, punts or field goals.

It's not surprising that Australia, America, and Great Britain would each keep the name "football" for the particular strains that grew to prominence in each country.

80. Association Football may not be best for this, but Cricket sure is. |
|
I mean, the Indian Premier League only started this year and they got a shedload of money... started off with $1Bn for domestic TV rights alone let alone other corporate deals (Citigroup - your tax bailout dollars at work). The teams, the commercialization - so... American - in India, playing an English sport.
The 20twenty style of cricket can really get commercial, if wanted to.
Heck, even Test cricket (the kind that goes on for days) has plenty of opportunities for commercial broadcasters to interrupt with commercials. If you watch Test cricket on like the BBC, most of the time you're watching the bowler polish the ball, or the batter getting prepared...
