Ok, I'm kinda disappointed with this... |
|
I read this in the Los Angeles Times yesterday, and was disappointed to note that President Obama will continue to allow the CIA to perform extraordinary rendition. I realize that any interrogations must now use the Army Field Manual, and that with the enforced closure of black-site prisons and Guantanamo, this may not be as odious as it was under the former administration, and that some may argue that under President Obama this power will be used judiciously and carefully. However the tools of tyranny cannot be used to defend liberty, and their judicious use does not redeem them, it merely justifies their use.
I'm not a concern troll, and I remain optimistic about the President and his Administration, but I am deeply disappointed by this decision.
Flame away.

4. Ahhh. Thank you for the details! |

One of the downsides of our local paper being bought by the Tribune is that the quality of "news" on the front page has degraded considerably. I appriciate the correction.

8. I appreciate your clarifications, |
|
but it still worries me a little that, according to the Times an "Obama administration official" said, "Obviously you need to preserve some tools -- you still have to go after the bad guys. The legal advisors working on this looked at rendition. It is controversial in some circles and kicked up a big storm in Europe. But if done within certain parameters, it is an acceptable practice." A lot rides on what those parameters are.

3. Not "extraordinary." Simply "rendition," which is the process of capturing/handing over criminals |

to foreign countries, usually the country that would otherwise have jurisdiction. Given the end of torture, end of indefinite detainment, and end of secret detainment, I'm not sure what the exact problem is.
That we're capturing terrorists instead of bombing them from 30,000 feet? That we're handing them over instead of throwing them in Guantanamo?
