Conservative group calls on ABC to curb Stephanopoulos
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 08:23 AM by wyldwolf
A conservative media watchdog organization is calling on an ABC news correspondent to recuse himself from any reporting involving the Obama administration in wake of news that he has been involved in daily strategy phone calls with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

On January 27, Politico broke the news that ABC News' George Stephanopoulos -- along with CNN pundits Paul Begala and James Carville -- regularly participates in the daily round-robin telephonic strategy sessions with Emanuel. Seton Motley, director of communications at the Media Research Center (MRC), argues the purported journalist is really a political operative.

"George Stephanopoulos is ABC News chief Washington correspondent and the host of their Sunday program This Week," Motley points out. "He is given to the American audience as a journalist. And of course this shows he never stopped being a Democrat operative....that's what he's been doing with these three other gentlemen."

The MRC spokesman says the undisclosed conversations have been going on for 17 years.

"Which means George Stephanopoulos had a hand in helping Rahm Emanuel get elected to Congress in 2002," says Motley. "Which means he had a daily hand Rahm Emanuel in 2006 leading the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in their successful bid to take back control of Congress."

In addition, Motley says Emanuel continues to receive Stephanopoulos' help in his new White House role.

Motley argues that such partisan activism is an outrage for someone who claims to be a journalist -- and that, he says, is why Stephanopoulos must recuse himself from any reporting involving the Obama administration.

I don't buy it. At times Stephanopoulos has gone so far out of his way to be balanced he tilts to the other side. And a conservative group is complaining about bias? Hello, FOX News???

1. Oh, boo hoo hoo.
Poor widdle whiny babies. Now that the shoes are changing feet (or coming off and being thrown, if you like) it's time to complain? Suck it up you big bunch of babies. Turn-about's fair play.

2. Because "conservative" pundits would never discuss anything with a Republican administration...

3. This is all they have to complain about??? Obviously they don't know
what the word "objective" means.

4. wahhhhh
I guess taking debate tips from Hannity and having practically an all conservative panel a lot of the time is not enough.

5. Oh yes, because Stephanopoulos is so friendly to Democrats.
Remember that spectacular debate he hosted last April?

6. Stephanopoulos should have been fired after the debate ABC hosted.
On that night, he demonstrated that he is NOT a journalist and lacks objectivity when it is crucial to be objective.

I quit watching his program. I don't care what happens to him or why.

7. I remember Stephanopoulos used to sorta irritate me leaning to the right
so much of the time, but I haven't watched him in forever. If the Republicans don't like him though, that must mean he's been doing something right. In that case, way to go, Stephanopoulos!

9. More proof
This is just more proof of how futile it is to try to kowtow to the right. Stephanopoulos bent over so far in the other direction to prove he's not soft on Democrats, to show his "objectivity," and still, they go after him as soon as they find something to further, once again, their "the media is biased for left" bullshit.

It's just more evidence of how freakin' insanely partisan they are. Nothing will ever be enough for them. Maybe Stephanopolous will get that now. None of the guys on Fox even TRIES to hide where they stand. Neither do the Morning Joe people. But in spite of all the blatant right-wing leaning "journalists" and commentators, it's only the Dems who get called out.

10. As much as I agree with
conservative being whiners, and agree with those who have said that Stephanopoulos isn't' a journalist, I think this crosses a line. If you're part of the Fourth estate, you shouldn't be involved in strategy sessions for one of the parties. Though George does come across as a right-wing tool much of the time, this disclosure just reinforces why none of us trust the corporate media.

14. I thought
that the original article said that the "strategy" calls were more with Rahm and Begala/Carville , and George just getting calls bc he knows them personally? I somehow doubt that George S. really talks strategy, I remember from his book that he and Carville/Begala/Rahm had strict rules after George left the White House not to talk about White House stuff (if that's true)...I think it's probably more a case of politico trying to shit stir. Not that I love the idea of Begala/Carville/George being in on any calls in that circle anyway.

17. Funny
I seem to remember Hannity, Boortz, and maybe another pundit (Beck?) having been invited to the Bush WH for political advice. That one seemed to have slipped down the rabbit hole. Guess they should've recused themselves from doing any punditry and/or reporting about Bush? Oh, wait a minute, I forgot. IOKIYAR.

18. I agree that he has never evidenced a "liberal bias,"
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 10:22 AM by EffieBlack
but, if this is true, it really is a problem for him. No journalist should be this deeply involved in long-term behind-the-scenes strategizing with political operatives.

If it came to light that Chris Matthews or Katie Couric or Wolf Blitzer had been engaging in such activity with Karl Rove, I imagine folks on left would be screaming just as loudly as this group is.
