Obama woos GOP sens. one at a time

Obama woos GOP sens. one at a time

By Alexander Bolton

Posted: 02/03/09 08:01 PM

President Obama is lobbying Republican senators personally on his economic stimulus package, which failed to attract a single GOP vote in the House.

Obama has scheduled one-on-one meetings at the White House with a handful of GOP centrists who he believes are most likely to support an economic recovery plan that Republican leaders have panned.

The president has also given Senate Democrats the green light on allowing Republican amendments to be heard, signaling he would accept a final product with some GOP changes.

Obama held a morning session with Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) on Tuesday. He has scheduled similar meetings with Maine Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins for Wednesday.

Specter said Obama asked him to give bipartisan support to the stimulus.

“He knew my record on it,” Specter said, in reference to his reputation for working across party lines.

6. He may need to schedule one with Conrad. I know Conrad was the first to endorse him
I know Conrad was the First Senator to endorse him but he's really been on TV bashing the hell out of the package. Obama may need to sit down with the ones in his own party

7. GOOD. He is firmly on record as making good-faith efforts to get repubs on board.
When they stonewall, whine, complain, filibuster & stomp their feet, they'll look all that more childish.

9. The Republicans defeated him on his
first big legislative initiative, and now he has to grovel for support.

Ugh.

12. We're going to get an economic recovery plan written
by Susan Collins, Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, and Ben Nelson.

13. And you base this on what?
The fact that this conclusion suits your own narrative?

And here I thought the media was bad. :eyes:

14. Ben Nelson is telling the press he's going to make sure
that items of personal priority to Obama are going to be taken out.

17. And that means that you call it defeat because Ben Nelson speaks?
Sound like you are the one easily defeated.

But then you never had any faith to begin with,
so again, this fits your narrative just fine.

Ain't it grand how one is able to just say anything fucking thing
here on this site?

16. Hardly, these people will be bought
That's what this comes down to. Collins, Specter, and Snowe will get money for some pet project or get to take credit for getting some thing or another removed from the plan and that will be that. Nelson is more or less the same way, although frankly his lack of party loyalty on this is quite troubling.

19. Well, that is a core group that will work with Obama.
Really, some of Collin's issues with the bill is the ridiculous crap the House Dems put in it. Take it out and you may have a better bill.

18. IMO, Limbaugh will direct the 41 republicans to filibuster the stimulus. They will
follow his orders without exception. The republicans are flexing their muscles and are controlling the Congress and the media now and the stimulus package will die on the vine. Pelosi's allowing the bill to be loaded up with non-stimulus items (however small they are) has allowed the republicans use them as ammunition and this has hurt us badly.
