Etta James says Obama NOT her President; wants to kick Beyonce's ass!
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 06:50 PM by Cash_thatswhatiwant

Oh snap! Just when we thought Etta James may have been happy about Beyonce singing her song “At Last” for the Prez and First Ladies’ First Dance on Inauguration night, we were thoroughly wrong. Fierce Kitty Etta showed who the real Diva was popped off extra hard on Beyonce during her concert in Seattle a few nights ago. She told the crowd: "You know, YOUR President, the one with the big ears-he ain’t MY President–had that woman singing for him at his Inauguration. She’s going to get her ass whooped.”

She went on asking “How dare Beyonce sing MY song that I been singing forever. Now I’m going to sing it for y’all….” I wonder if she popped off in Beyonce’s ear during the Cadillac Records premiere.

Chick even popped off on President Obama. I would ask if she smoked something before she hopped on stage, but that would be inappropriate. Even the Seattle papers were shocked. I always knew Ms. Etta was fiesty, but damn. Somebody no likey Beyonce–at all.

4. clue for etta: At Last was written when you were 3 years old
It was popularized by Glenn Miller in the 1940s and by Nat King Cole in the 1950s. While James' rendition in 1961 is the highest charting version of it, she doesn't "own" the song -- she, like Beyonce, just borrowed it.

13. I'm too old to understand why, but a lot of folks in the black
community do not like Beyonce for some reason. My daughter can't stand her and leaves the room whenever she's on. When I ask what's that about, she said that it seems like Beyonce is always butting in something and trying to take over it. As I said, I'm too old to understand it, it's enough that I even know who Beyonce is. My daughter said she doesn't have as much talent as others more deserving and I got into an argument with her because Beyonce definitely has talent. MY daughter finally admitted that, but still seemed to think that she always horns in when there are other more talented singers.

18. Miss B irks me because she oversings the hell out of every song
she sings. It's like she can't make up her mind which note to sing so she sings them all in the span of 1.3 seconds every 10 seconds. Yodel, why don't you?

Plus, I think Miss B is way overexposed, too! But at least she's not always crying about wanting her privacy - for that, I'll give her a little bit of respect.

Overexposure. Some entertainers have been careful not to overexpose themselves because you're right, just as you say, when you see them too much or hear them too much you can start to get annoyed with them.

I am far from an actual "Fan" of Beyonce, but I think she is a gorgeous girl with a good voice and who truly seems to have been brought up well by her parents.

Jealousy is the only explanation of why so many seem to dislike her so intensely. She seems to have it all.

Based on the central character in the Eminem song of the same name, a "stan" is an overzealous maniacal fan for any celebrity or athlete.

And according to her in post 56 women who don't wear bras are whores, 'shamoota' being Arabic for whore.

32. Jealousy
That simple.

Etta James has a bad, bad case of it. She didn't object to Beyonce portraying her in that movie, but now she's pissed?

People her age - like me - need to get hip to the fact that a new generation has taken over - which is just as it should be. We had our shot, and we didn't do too badly (we ended a war in Vietnam and taught the world about free love) until Fuckface and his thugs stole two elections.

So, now, we can just sit back and lend a hand to the kids whenever they ask us for it. If they do.

Etta's not doing that "aging gracefully" thing too well, methinks.

And Beyonce, well, what girl doesn't want to be her?

What little I know of the young woman is that she's married to a man she's dated for a long time.

Wearing a bra - as in your case - obviously doesn't mean a woman is necessarily worthwhile.

You really do underscore my point - your need to trash someone with a great talent, a great career, untold riches, fame, and love because why?

Oh, that's an easy one.

Jealousy.

45. I share your daughters feelings on Beyonce
I'm definitely not a fan. I do think she has talent but she's just not one of my favorites. One of the things that bothers me is that she claims to write her own songs but really doesn't. There's nothing wrong with co-writing or not writing at all...just don't lie about it. Some of her songs are so annoying (Single Ladies) and the radio plays them to death. It seems that there are certain people that the radio will play and play, no matter how good or bad the song (Justin Timberlake, Nickelback, Rihanna to name a few others).

I remember seeing Kelly Rowland perform live on TV, and she was out of breathe from a small amount of singing and dancing within the first minute of the song. Beyonce can sing and dance for hours; I've seen Beyonce in concert and she was never out of breathe and her voice never went out, and she did waaaaaaaay more singing and dancing for hours than Kelly did in three minutes.

I mean the review they link to only writes this:

"She was equally feisty in introducing "At Last," colorfully expressing her displeasure that Beyoncé was the one performing the song for Barack and Michelle Obama at the president's first Neighborhood Ball. James conveyed the grace of the dreamy ballad, even though her singing isn't nearly as nimble as it once was, while her growling accents spiced up Al Green's buoyant "Love and Happiness.""

Her behavior at recent concerts has been a matter of concern and speculation.

And this is credible, because she has said so much at her concerts.

I figure it's jealousy, and understandle in a way. But I think after someone in the inauguration committee got a hold of Ms. James, they got a taste of what many have seen at her recent concerts and decided it might not be the best idea to her perform at the ball.

29. Instead of a "diva"..I'd call her
a whack job for insulting our Prez with her personal problems against big ears.

Too bad there has to be a controversary about this beautiful song that Beyonce sang for the Obamas.

My money is on Beyonce.

"At Last" is a 1941 song written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren for the musical film Orchestra Wives, starring George Montgomery and Ann Rutherford. It was first performed in the film and on record by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, vocal by Ray Eberle and Pat Friday. The song was a major hit for Miller, reaching number 14 on the Billboard pop charts in 1942, and it soon became a standard. Nat King Cole recorded it in 1957 on his number one album Love Is the Thing. In 1960, it was covered by blues singer Etta James in a performance that improvised on Warren's melody. James was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 for her rendition of the song."

Sounds like Etta James has a problem with jealousy.

The woman has always been very rough. She has certainly has seen ups and downs, and bottles of booze and needles and jail cells. One could call her quite rowdie......and I don't think she has really changed that much. If she doesn't claim Obama as her President, when he is....then she has a real problem.

Etta James is an alcoholic and a former heroin addict.....

she may be fully recovered (?), but perhaps she is judging Beyonce harshly than she needs to because she can.

Etta James blues concert a huge disappointment

Lord knows I hate to defend the Coliseum management, but from what I've heard about Etta's performances in recent years, their length and quality seem to vary with her physical condition and mood on any given night and could in no way have been accurately predicted in advance.

Maybe she was "high risk", but then so are a lot of other performers.

Beyonce Donates 4 Million Dollars to Drug Rehab Programs

Beyonce has made an incredibly generous donation of 4 million dollars for drug rehab programs via Phoenix House. This was the money she made starring in her latest movie which was about the life of Etta James . Etta James was a singer with a serious drug addiction. Phoenix House is the drug rehabilitation centre that Beyonce was at while studying for the acting role.

Phoenix Center has almost 100 programs in the US and they include both residential as well as outpatient therapy clinics for drug rehabilitation. Etta James had a heroin problem as well as some criminal activity history.

Beyonce’s generosity was in the news in past for her donation of $100,000 for the Gulf Coast Ike Relief Fund after the hurricane Ike hit Galveston and other towns in Texas.

It is awesome that Beyonce Knowles was so moved by the stories and people she met at Phoenix House to donate her entire salary from the movie Cadillac Records for this cause of addiction rehabilitation. She obviously is not just giving lip service to this important cause but it is from the heart. Phoenix House has been around for forty years and is well established in it’s mission for helping people regain health from drug addictions that are destroying their lives. Beyonce is an authentic person and her gesture will effect both addicts and non-addicts for years to come.

55. I listened to the audio and she sounded blowed out of her mind..
she can say what she wants about Beyonce...we know it's because she's past her time and jealous...but what does she mean that Obama isn't her President? Who is then? She's nutty.

94. I think this is all from jealousy of not being asked.
I did wonder why she wasn't asked since shes not dead, but I totally understand b/c of her drug abuse history and the fact that she is losing her voice lately. She needs to be happy Beyonce made that movie so people my age would even know who she was.

72. I can understand why she's pissed off.
That was her signature song. To ask some young thing to sing it was a major snub considering Etta's still performing.

It was tactless but then again, so was her response.

49. "MY song"?
The song was written in 1941 for a musical, was made a big hit in 1941 by Glenn Miller (14 on the charts). Etta didn't release a version of it until 1961, and it hit 47 on the charts.

Etta likes to fight. She has been fighting all of her life. Mostly with her own personal demons -- drugs, alcohol, and anger.

do their first dance to At Last, it should have been Etta singing it.

64. Who told you that?
If I recall Beyonce supported the President while he was a candidate, while Etta James apparently doesn't. So why should Obama "ask" Etta James to sing, when it was Beyonce who asked President Obama if she could sing for him and the First Lady?

78. I'm not a Beyonce fan, but I sort of feel sorry for her in this regard
Remember when Aretha tore her a new one for the duet she did with Tina Turner? Beyonce said in the performance that Tina was "the queen" (but she never specified "queen of SOUL") and Aretha was all over it.

I don't even think Beyonce came up with that Tina Turner introduction on her own....poor girl just seems to catch it from all sides for some reason.

But that's what happens when you're considered the the modern-day standard....you're held up to scrutiny by the greats.

I just don't remember Whitney Houston catching this much hell in the 80s and 90s from her peers in the industry. (Bobby Brown was another story.)

79. Well Whitney Houston has a phenomenal voice and a past as a gospel singer.
It's kinda hard to criticize her singing without sounding like a catty old fool.

Now her life choices? That's a whole 'nother thing. Ugh.

Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 03:15 PM by LisaM
I have to put my hands over my ears when I hear her sing Dolly's "I Will Always Love You", though from all accounts she and Dolly get along fine and Dolly loves the money Whitney's rendition brought in.

I've heard personal accounts of Etta James' behavior and it's not very pretty, but on the other hand, she can sing circles around Beyonce (or could in her prime).

88. Only thing Whitney Houston caught it on was "it took me to make that song #1".

I believe it was in the movie Bodyguard that she sang a Dolly Parton song that made it to #1 on the charts. But she then made the mistake of claiming "Dolly did it first, but it took me to make it #1."

In reality it spent more time as the #1 song when Dolly recorded it than when Whitney did.
