The Action Americans Need

By Barack Obama

Thursday, February 5, 2009; Page A17

-snip-
This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending -- it's a strategy for America's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, health care and education. And it's a strategy that will be implemented with unprecedented transparency and accountability, so Americans know where their tax dollars are going and how they are being spent.

In recent days, there have been misguided criticisms of this plan that echo the failed theories that helped lead us into this crisis -- the notion that tax cuts alone will solve all our problems; that we can meet our enormous tests with half-steps and piecemeal measures; that we can ignore fundamental challenges such as energy independence and the high cost of health care and still expect our economy and our country to thrive.

I reject these theories, and so did the American people when they went to the polls in November and voted resoundingly for change. They know that we have tried it those ways for too long. And because we have, our health-care costs still rise faster than inflation. Our dependence on foreign oil still threatens our economy and our security. Our children still study in schools that put them at a disadvantage. We've seen the tragic consequences when our bridges crumble and our levees fail.

Every day, our economy gets sicker -- and the time for a remedy that puts Americans back to work, jump-starts our economy and invests in lasting growth is now.

-snip-
So we have a choice to make. We can once again let Washington's bad habits stand in the way of progress. Or we can pull together and say that in America, our destiny isn't written for us but by us. We can place good ideas ahead of old ideological battles, and a sense of purpose above the same narrow partisanship. We can act boldly to turn crisis into opportunity and, together, write the next great chapter in our history and meet the test of our time.

The writer is president of the United States.

5. I know. I loved that because Obama didn't sign it as "by President Barack Obama".
He isn't real comfortable throwing the term "President" around - examples - he doesn't let them announce him at the White House before signing ceremonies and stuff ("The President of the United States") instead he just walks in, he has told the Marine Band that he doesn't want them playing Hail to the Chief every time he enters a room, he still gets surprised when he walks in a room and everyone stands up. It is kind of endearing.

25. I think he's the first grown-up we've had for president in a long time.
He is the alpha male among alpha males. I love how he is unafraid of the Republican machine. I just hope he won't let these 'post-partisan' cabinet picks of his derail what's supposed to be a 'change' agenda.

Not only is he capable of writing without the assistance of ghost-writers and such, but he's a damned good writer!

8. Typical short-sighted thinking
There's 10,000 improved schools, one of which your children probably attend because you don't earn enough to live in a $12,000 per student district. Your health records will be streamlined, reducing your health care costs. 75% of federal buildings will be greened to reduce power demand and costs. There is money to pay for your health care if you lose your job. There is money to improve the national parks so you can walk across a bridge and look at the falls in Yosemite without fearing falling in. Or drive on roads to get there without worrying bridges will collapse.

There is PLENTY in this bill for you if you look a little further than your back pocket and think with something besides your ass.

18. From your post you have obviously read nothing at all
you've only taken talking points from Herr Limbaugh. Same tired old ideas, same failed policies. When will you people get a clue? The GOP has been waging war on the middle class since Nixon was in office. You may as well flush every paycheck down the toilet as vote Republican; the results will be the same. Why the self loathing? Or are you simply brainwashed? YOUR boys got us into this mess. Continuing their idiocy would be complete insanity-and no sensible American who actually cares about their country will go for it.

16. Three of Washington's bad habits:Geithner, Rubin Summers

Stimulus is going to be passed.

Most people are hoping it will work but there are no guarantees because we don't know how much of a hole Summers, Rubin, and Geithner, are digging for us in their Big Bank Bailout plans and how much of that is being invested overseas.

37. How frustrating to have
the corporatemedia, hate radio, and all the vultures in Congress spreading lies and catapulting the propaganda to keep the President from passing his stimulus bill in order to help our country.

If bushits had all that majority, the corporatemedia, and the rest..you know they'd get it passed with our dems shuffling along.
