That and some idiot conservatives on the web who thought it'd be "funny" to stop him getting the money he needed for treatment.

31. Pancreatic cancer claimed both of Carter's sisters, his brother, and his father.
My aunt died of it 19 years ago.

5. Here is a brief newslink:
WASHINTTON (AP) - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer, apparently at an early stage.

The court said the 75-year-old Ginsburg had the surgery Thursday at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days, said her surgeon. Dr. Murray Brennan. This was according to a release issued by the court.

Ginsburg, a justice since 1993, had colon cancer earlier in her tenure.

The cancer was discovered during a routine, annual exam late last month at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

The court said a CAT scan revealed a tumor measuring about 1 centimeter across the center of the pancreas.

10. That's the cancer equivalent to getting hit by a bus...
Although hers was found early, which is very rare. Most pancratic cancers are found at stage 4, by which time it's far too late to do anything about it. CNN is reporting that they found it by accident, which is pretty much the only way a pancreatic tumor is found before stage 4.

11. Poor lady--prayers to her. If it's the "Whipple Procedure", it's one of the
longest, most extensive surgeries you can have--they're basically rearranging your entire insides, because of the importance of the pancreas.

12. How awful for her. She is one strong woman
though. She hangs on. I've had awful thoughts wishing it was Scalia instead but then I thought pancreatic cancer wouldn't dare touch him. He would scare it off.

Pancreatic cancer is fast, deadly and terribly painful.

21. It's the worst kind of cancer to get
It is very unlikely that someone is alive after five years, even if you find it early.

I think she might decide to be with her family with the time remaining, rather than on SC.

20. On the old Al Franken show
He had a parody song called "Hang on Stevens (Stevens hang on!) based on the old song "Hang on Sloopy".

There was a verse with "Hang on Ginsberg! Ginsberg hang on!" that encouraged her to "keep on keeping on 'til 2009."

Freaky.

22. here is the latest link: Hospitalized at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, NYC
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 01:52 PM by SuperTrouper
Our beloved Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg once again has been hit with a new cancer. After surviving colon cancer in 1993 here we go again, this time with the most deadly of cancers. Fortunately, it has been caught at an early stage, although the mortality rate is still quite high. Victims of pancreatic cancer who succumbed to the disease have been Sen. Frank Church, Jack Benny, US Cardinal Joseph Bernanrdin, Lillian Carter (mother of former President Jimmy Carter), Billy Carter (brother of former Presidewnt Carter), Ruth Carter Stapleton, Gloria Carter Spann (both sisters of former President Carter), Joan Crawford, Fred Gwynne (Herman Munster), Fernando Lamas, Luciano Pavarotti, Michael Landon, and Spanish superstar Rocio Jurado. Living with this cancer are Patrick Swayze, Steve Jobs, and American opera singer Marylin Horne.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had surgery Thursday after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the court said.

Ginsburg, 75, had the surgery at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days, said her surgeon, Dr. Murray Brennan, according to a release issued by the court.

The court announcement said the cancer is apparently in the early stages.

In 1999, Ginsburg, had surgery for colon cancer and had chemotherapy and radiation treatment. She has been a justice since 1993.

The pancreatic cancer was discovered during a routine, annual exam late last month at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

A CAT scan revealed a tumor measuring about 1 centimeter across the center of the pancreas, the court said.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers: Nearly 38,000 cases a year are diagnosed and overall, fewer than 5 percent survive five years.

The reason: Fewer than one in 10 cases are diagnosed at an early stage — like Ginsburg's appears to be — before the cancer has begun spreading through the abdomen and beyond. That's because early pancreatic cancer produces few symptoms other than vague indigestion.

Even when caught early, surgery for pancreatic cancer is arduous. Doctors typically remove parts of the pancreas, stomach and intestines. Radiation and chemotherapy are common after surgery.

Ginsburg has recently told her former law clerks and others that she had no plans to retire any time soon, although those comments were made before the latest diagnosis.

27. Her prognosis is good though
Her doctors found a 1cm, fully contained lesion and removed it. The lesion was discovered in a routine exam.

Justice Ginsburg should be congratulated for so fully and quickly disclosing her medical conditions.
Extending wishes for a speedy recovery.
