A pleasant surprise in a fashion column
From the WSJ:

Celebrities Raise Reem Acra's Profile

By TERI AGINS, RAY A. SMITH and JENNIFER SARANOW

Red-carpet watchers on Oscar night may see a gown designed by Reem Acra, whose 12-year-old label got a boost last month after strapless red gowns she created were worn by Jill Biden and Eva Longoria.

(snip)

She hopes to capitalize on all the buzz she has received since Ms. Longoria, an actress, appeared at the Golden Globe Awards in one of Ms. Acra's sculpted silk couture gowns -- drawing raves from critics. Dr. Biden wore a gown with a flowing chiffon skirt to the inaugural balls.

1. Jill Biden is 57. Look at her in that gown. She looks every bit as good as
Eva.

2. She really does
I liked her dress better than Eva's. I think Jill is a beautiful woman.

3. Yuck. I don't like Eva's dress.
Dresses that are tight over your torso & thighs & then flare out like that at the bottom look ridiculous. Jill's dress is much more flattering. It flows.

5. Very few women can look good at Eva's dress
who have zero fat and, no doubt, is inside "body shape" thingies. (We don't use the term corset any more)

Dr. Biden's dress can be worn by regular women (well, some of them).

7. looks like a wetsuit gone wacko
not attractive..especially on a "less-than-tall stringbean" figure..Eva could have done better.. When you are short, less is more:)

11. Petite on a woman is beautiful. It's the fact that the dress is too tight and cut oddly.

The mermaid dress is goofy, no matter what the woman's build. Eva's slight, girlish figure is not the problem. She still looks better than 99% of the population would in that dress, despite its weird shape.

The problem is that the fashion industry cuts clothing for women who are Eva's size and weight ( size 0, <100 pounds) but taller than most men, which is crazy, and not all that common, as average height for a female is 5'4".

9. I don't think the dress looks that great on Eva Longoria, either.
Eva makes the dress look better, but the midsection of that gown isn't very flattering. I like the bodice, but the rest is marginal.
