Barbara Boxer just showed the whole Democratic Party how to kick GOP ass
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 06:38 PM by democracy1st
Lindsey Graham took the floor and threw a frat boy tantrum, and senator Boxer took him on. She didn't stutter and she didn't equivocate. With force she called him out on his theatrics and asked how many times he pulled that trick during the Bush years.

One thing is perfectly clear about the Democratic party and that is the women are a hell of alot stronger than the men. President Obama needs a fighter to back him up and call these liars out, and expose their dirty deeds.

For as long as I can remember republicans have ridiculed, lied and disrespected democrats, time for change.

She is utterly righteous!!!

She wouldn't get rolled like Harry Reid does, almost every hour on the hour.

She would certainly gain us back some respect here in California. Nancy "IMPEACHMENT is off the table" Pelosi and Dianne "My ego! My ego! He didn't consult me!!!" Feinstein leave a rather bad taste in the mouth.

I'd trade a thousand of each of those useless, capitulating jellies for ONE Barbara Boxer. Not sure I could give you a buck-98 for the whole lot of the rest of 'em. Well, except maybe for Gary Ackerman of New York. He UTTERLY ROCKS!!! He should replace Pelosi and Boxer should get in the ring instead of Reid. Doormats and Neville Chamberlains need not apply.

This idea that when elected officials take off in a corrupt direction is something

You can't travel two paths/two directions at one time ---

The Treasury is bankrupted --- these are insane wars --- end them now!!!

68. what needs to be said to these people:
while you sit here posturing and trying to make yourself look good, your constituents are LOSING THEIR JOBS. they are losing their homes. they are worrying how they are going to feed their families. You can afford to sit here and position yourself politically, because you have a paycheck coming in. You have the best health insurance paid for by these same people whom you seem not to be too concerned about right now. Your ideas have already had their chance. they are the reason we are here having to create a bill to try to fix it. to try to get our economy moving again. so before you go whining about bipartisan, when you and I both know that you had no intention to be a part of this bill from the start, go look your constituents in the eye and tell them that your pride and your politics are more important than their job or their family. you tell them that your desire to block recovery or even the attempt at recovery is more important than their ability to feed their family and their dignity. sure, we may need all these things that we are trying to get through, but you want to stand in the way of help for Americans because you CAN. to prove that you can.

14. As a male Dem, let me say this: our male D congress critters
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 06:20 PM by stopbush
all suffer from a big case of penis envy. No, not penis envy, wealth and connection to wealth envy.

Rs are connected to wealth. They can afford all of the big and shiny new toys that the rich people have. They pal around with rich people.

Dem male congress critters are a bunch of wannabees who are intimidated by Rs who are better off than them financially and who are "respected" by the business types and the uber-rich. You separate the men from the boys by the price of their toys, goes the saying.

So, unless you're a Dem who already has a strike against you - ie: you're a woman, you're openly gay, you're black, you're Kucinich - you spend your days in the old boy's club pining for the same stature that the R old boys have.

109. Howard Dean was from a wealthy family, though
Maybe not a Rockefeller or Getty, but still wealthy.

"Dean was born in East Hampton, New York, to Howard Brush Dean, Jr. and Andrée Belden Maitland, an art appraiser.<4> He is the oldest of their four children, all boys.<4>

Howard's father worked at Dean Witter; the family was quite wealthy, Republican, and belonged to the exclusive Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton. As a child he spent much of his time growing up in East Hampton; the family built a house on Hook Pond<5> there in the mid-1950s. There the boys – Howard, Charlie, Jim and Bill – "rode bikes, played with a model train set, built elaborate underground forts." While in New York, the family had a three-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side part of Park Avenue, where Dean still sometimes stays.<4>

Howard attended the Browning School in Manhattan until he was 13, then went to St. George's School, a preparatory school in Middletown, Rhode Island.<6> In September 1966, he attended Felsted School, UK for one school year after winning an English Speaking Union scholarship."

119. The rest of that paragraph...
Political opponents have been reluctant to seize upon Dean's privileged early life.
UPI quoted one of Dean's friends in his youth as saying "By Hamptons standards, the Deans were not rich. No safaris in Africa or chalets in Switzerland. Howard's father went to work every day. He didn't own a company, or have a father or grandfather who founded one, as mine did."<8> Peggy Noonan wrote in the Wall Street Journal that "he doesn't seem like a WASP. I know it's not nice to deal in stereotypes, but there seems very little Thurston Howell, III, or George Bush, the elder, for that matter, in Mr. Dean...He seems unpolished, doesn't hide his aggression, is proudly pugnacious. He doesn't look or act the part of the WASP...It will be harder for Republicans to tag Mr. Dean as Son of the Maidstone Club than it was for Democrats to tag Bush One as Heir to Greenwich Country Day. He just doesn't act the part."<9>

127. I completely agree, and like them, he chose a life of public service.
It is idiotic to attack people for their background. They are good or bad depending on what they do.

(I admired that Kerry in 2004 never challenged that he was born to a high social strata - even though his immediate family was less wealthy than Dean's. The distinction is meaningless and in both cases, they had contacts from birth who could and would help them that most of us never had. Those connections actually mean more than having millions.)

128. That's as may be, but Hampton standards aren't what we're necessarily talking about
He's richer than most of us, and richer than a lot of the Senators they were referring to. He's on that side of the divide. I'm not saying that he hasn't used his privilege for good - as the Kennedys have - but I felt that the implication was that Dean had somehow pulled himself up by his boot straps.

28. Over the top on male Democrats
I don't know that Kerry who married the rich has that problem. He's no weak kneed man.

Durbin does not lack stature or guts either. Feingold hasn't been a shrinking violet in my opinion.

Men are motivated by more than power, money and sex.

I think the Democrats in the Senate have lacked the desire to call someone to heel because they abide by the collegial hype. Republicans have one strategy: attack.

Democrats are punks because they don't rip somone's head off. We are weak because we don't belittle other people.

We are strong because the substance is what matters most to us. Republicans will lie and tell you what they think you want to hear while they do whatever they want to do.

50. While I agree in large part that there is a certain belief in a level/base of
behavior which shouldn't be eroded --- and I've seen it succeed long, long in the past ---

and even a little bit right now with Repugs being a tiny bit nicer at hearings but only

because they don't want the public to see what rats they really are.

HOWEVER, there is a difference between being cordial, pleasant, whatever and letting

Repugs walk all over you as Harry Reid does. And Pelosi.

In their cases, it isn't so much a matter of being too nice -- but a difference of loyalty.

Boxer is protecting the nation/citizens. Reid/Pelosi are protecting DLC/Establishment . . .

the owners of the country.

And, you'll always hear from them how the GOP blocked them.

Coincidentally, the GOP blocks them whether the GOP is the minority or the majority!

And the Dems NEVER can seem to do the same.

Would you say something like "Reid makes a strong argument against male leadership"? Of course you wouldn't, so it's ridiculous for you to post that.

People are people, gender doesn't come into this.
Feinstein and Pelosi are terrible, admittedly; however their gender is circumstantial. There are a ton of male milquetoasts
especially (unfortunately) with a D after their name & title.

Unbelievable.

I see the poster got tombstoned (wish I had gotten to see what he said, also how long he'd been here), but it's interesting the guy (Edit: girl) who fully agreed and thought it was tres amusing (*snapped!*) is still here...

Why does it seem things just get worse here, at least no improvement?
Seriously. :(

BTW, do you know the etymology/development of 'got/received/was delivered a pizza' instead of 'tombstoned'?
I don't quite get the connection or analogy... Thanks!

Also liked Durbin correcting Lindsey (I think he's just mad he wasn't one of the group of 16 senators)

Also loved it today when Durbin called McCain for his outrageous statement that the bill had zero defense spending and McCain had to backtrack.

to Rush Limbaugh crying poverty.
We should be cutting defense spending. 19 guys with box cutters defeated the world's most expensive military. Cut defense spending in half and we'll all be better off, excepting defense contractors and those in Congress who get "campaign contributions" from them.

93. I think we're so starved for any reaction
to Repub tantrums, that must be noted. Comparatively to Dem reactions in the past, that WAS 'kicking ass' (however BB has always had more cajones --if I may use that term-- than most of her male counterparts).

Now if she had followed up with one or two bon mots, that certainly would be kicking his ass... I wish there was more of the clip to see if she did.

The whole thing is sad, but at least something was said instead of the de riguer of letting them get away with it.

Lindsay Graham has the nerve to wave the Stimulus Package Bill with disdain and declare that its passage signals America's days as an economic power are numbered. He should know. As a Bush insider,he knows where all the bodies are buried. Thirty years of Republican sapping our country's wealth and this pansy is complicit in the massive theft of our treasury. The hypocrite has got to go! South Carolina voters WAKE UP! Boot this guy to the curb.

If you saw Boxer speak to her amendment the other night you
