Asshole said Cheney was "perhaps" out of line for suggesting that America be attacked again. He also suggested that democrats cave to republican demands so the stimulus bill would be 50-50. Something has happened to the guy, he used to make sense most nights.

And, David, you know what? So what if he was?! What have the Republicans done to deserve better?

43. Gergen is one of the few honorable, decent, courageous and incorruptible Republicans |
|
Lest we forget, that's a VERY short list. Kevin Phillips is another. I'm having a hard time coming up with another example.
Gergen doesn't play games. He looks like the Mama Bear in the old Warner Brothers cartoons, and he serves the same function in his party: keeping the hotheads at bay.
Gergen gives a damn. He actually cares. He's not full of himself like virtually every other pundit, whose egos are gargantuan; he actually sees himself as someone who's been given a bit of an unofficial public trust, and he holds himself to high standards.
Whether he's correct or not here is another matter. My first instinct was that he was spot on, but upon reflection, the way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them. Republicans are testing Obama, and perhaps he's wiser to be firm and a bit in their faces. He was hardly a dick about it, after all.
Still, the important thing is winning. If this unravels into some endless morass with a watered-down bill and more sacrificing of liberal policies like the lame-ass bailing on contraception, then maybe we should reassess.
More than anything else, we don't know what's REALLY going on. Gergen doesn't either, but he sure as hell knows a hell of a lot more than the rest of us. If there's some more-serious-than-expected bad blood between certain Republicans and the Dems, this kind of thing may just exacerbate it.
Nonetheless, Gergen is to be trusted, and he's constructive; unlike some of the other reckless partisans, he recognizes the danger and he wants this country to pull out of this dive.

As good as his speech was, it was milder than I would have liked. I'm ready for slash and burn politics. Burn, baby, burn.
