The Real Reason The Repubs wont pass the Bill (medium rant)
I've thought about this and I have come to realization that while the republicans are evil, they aren't always stupid. I think the reason they are dragging their feet on this bill or making every effort to stop it is NOT because they fear the bill and the spending will hurt America, it's not because they truly believe that Tax cuts for the rich are the only way to go.

The real reason is that the GOP is in the shitter and they are staring down the barrel at 4 to possibly 8 years with an extremely popular president who they have recognized as someone who will actually bring us out of the dark place that Bush and his cronies sank us into.

The Repubs know that if and when this stimulus package passes that America will start on it's road to recovery and the last thing they want is to watch as a democrat succeeds in cleaning up their failure. It would be a crushing blow to their party to have Obama presidency be an overwhelming success. After 8 years with a president with such low approval ratings, and the stigma of lies, torture, corruption, greed and economic collapse as their current legacy, they can't afford to let anything good come from the democrats.

So I suspect all this grand standing, fake outrage and obstructive behavior is going to continue well beyond this stimulus Bill. I fear we're in for a long fight as this President works his ass off to clean up the aftermath from the last 8 years while the republicans stand around him playing keep away with the broom.

The Republican party has and never will care for the American people. They care about one thing... POWER. And since they are lacking said power, they are gonna act like little children having a tantrum over not getting a cookie and will continue to make Obama's life hell just hoping they will get their precious power back soon.

What's sick to think about this is that the republicans don't give a shit how bad this country gets as long as in the end they get what they want. I read a few posts through out the day where DU posters called for the Dems to just call the GOP's bluff. I couldn't agree more. I hoped that Obama could get the bi-partisanship relationships he was working for, but it doesn't look like the GOP is willing to listen to reason or even the cries for help from their own constituents.

So Fuck em' !

Dems' should do what they want and make it abundantly clear who's to blame when or if things fail. Maybe then the GOP will grow the hell up and start acting like professionals working for the best interest of this country.

1. The thing is, I think Obama's advantage will grow over time.
He's building his relationship with the American people now. Already I see Republican McCain voters in TX who feel he's a good man trying to do the right thing. That's a start.

The crucial thing is that he continue to communicate with the American people what he's doing, because there's certainly no guarantee the economy will recover in a couple of years. As long as he builds trust and good will, the American people will trust him more and more and see the Republicans for the bitter obstructionists they are more and more.

Obama's power will grow and theirs will wane further if they persist in this.

I can see the scenario playing out various other ways too that don't work to our advantage, but I don't see it as a give that the Republicans will be successful in what they are trying to do (I agree with you on their goals).

2. The beauty of the way Obama has handled this is that what
you are seeing, the American public is also seeing. They are being exposed.

4. Not just that but they are starting to realize that they can't walk all over Obama.
They were all pissed after he gave that speech yesterday, it was awesome!
They cried foal that Obama was disrespecting them while trying to ask for their support, but it was already obvious that Obama was reacting to THEM slapping his hand away while he offered it to them in support and compromise.

They are losing ground fast and are getting desperate, so all they can do is try and make this bill fail, or at the least fill it with crap like tax cuts for the rich that will render this bill pointless and then blame Obama for why the Bill didn't help like he said it would. Of course ignoring the fact that all the programs Obama put in there to help were taken out because of them. They are determined to make him look bad at the cost of the American people's livelihoods.

3. Absolutely. And another thing about Obama's bipartisanship,
I am beginning to think that by presenting himself as honest, postive, and bipartisan, he has proven that he is not the obstruction. This will make it very clear just who is making the trouble. No one can deny it.

6. Exactly he's taking the high road and the GOP are making themselves the obvious problem
I think Obama is going to balance his patience and compromise with the GOP with his ability to stand up to them and not let them play these games. He's gonna call them out and he will make sure that the american people know who are the real people responsible, no matter how much the GOP tries to pin any failure on Obama.

5. I agree but I also think they want to be able to say it was because of their push for restraint
Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 11:05 PM by Flabbergasted
that the economy recovered. And if Obama fails they can say their wasn't enough restraint.

8. I think you are close
I think it is because they want to hold things up long enough that a few compromises are made and that they can thereby claim that they "fixed" a broken bill. Ie, by pissing on it enough, they can claim that the thing is their's.
