Transportation was not cut in Senate compromise
Compromise reached on Senate economic recovery bill; transit funding remains at $8.4 billion (Download in Adobe PDF format)

February 9, 2009

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote tonight on a bipartisan amendment to the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act" that reduces the total level of spending in its version of the stimulus package, but the amendment does not alter transportation funding levels. Transit funding is expected to remain at $8.4 billion and high-speed passenger rail funding will remain at $2 billion. Transportation programs in the Senate bill are funded as follows:

$8.4 billion, urban and rural transit formula;

$27 billion, highway formula;

$5.5 billion, intermodal/discretionary program;

$2 billion, high-speed rail corridor investments;

$250 million, intercity passenger rail grant program;

$850 million, Amtrak;

$60 million, ferryboat discretionary grants;

However, this is still less than the 12 billion allocated in the House bill, so hopefully we can get at least 10 billion in the bill, including provisions for operating expenses.
