The Press Conference just "jumped the shark!" The A-Rod question is stupid! |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 08:52 PM by aaaaaa5a
This question proves the press is running out of questions. The A-Rod question was ridiculous. Can you imagine a Presidential press conference where the President actually answers so many questions the press runs out of things to say.
This press conference is suppose to be about the economy. Right now he is answering a question about steroids and Pakistan.
I guess he won the stimulus argument!

Too many fucking a's. So is your use of "jumped the shark". What an absolute inane comment. The press ran out of questions? What a laugh. You've got a problem with the importance of sports in our culture. Get the fuck over it. Who's stupid?

19. Clam down.... baseball is a cool sport... |
|
However I think you are vastly overstating it's importance. It's not close to being the most popular sport in America. And have you seen the TV ratings for Baseball? They are largely terrible! Almost every show on network TV attracts a larger audience than a MLB game. That's why the NLCS is now on cable! Those are facts. Not everyone even knows who A-Rod is.
The purpose of this press conference was suppose to be the economy. A-Rod and steroids is a niche market on the National stage. The economy effects everyone.
The question didn't belong. This was not the forum to discuss the difficulties of A-Rod, Bud Selig and Major League Baseball. He's not Bob Costas.
The good news is the President was well informed on the issue. Despite his demanding job I guess he found time to catch ESPN at some point throughout the day!

|
He's not talking about Baseball. The President is talking about maintaining your lifestyle. He's talking about going to see some hoop. A football game. Whatever. It's about spending $$. If you lose faith in the contest you are seeing than the whole culture of sport is destroyed. Might as well go see Professional Wrestling. As an athlete, THAT is what he is talking about. Jesus, have you ever competed in anything???

I'm not talking about the Presidents answer. I'm talking about the reporters question.
This was the wrong forum to ask about a baseball player. There were more important issues at stake. Maybe he could have followed up his baseball question by asking the President about Tiger Woods and his wife welcoming a new son to their family.
Then you could come on this board and use vulgar language to tell us the reporter was emphasizing the importance of family and fatherhood to the American people! LOL!

32. "Importance of sports in our culture"--Great point. As Jacques Ellul, Neil Postman, |
|
and other keen observers of culture have noted, sports has played important political roles in society since ancient Rome. A-Rod is an important cultural icon in an era of massive propaganda to suppress active citizen participation in society and to foster passive citizen observation.
I was quite impressed with Obama's answer to the question--pointing out that A-Rod is a role model and that the lesson children should take from him that" there are no shortcuts" to hard work. Taking a shortcut can cancel out years of hard work by destroying your reputation.

The populace has ALWAYS used sports as a backbone. The Great Depression. World War II. When we lose our faith in sports, we're fucking doomed. You're right about one thing. A-Rod sucks. Always has!

is used as a distraction to get people from paying attention. And I love baseball and football but... And as a former Yankees fan I will never go back to supporting them until A-Rod is gone.

How about an attraction? Chief Justice Earl Warren said "I read the sports pages, first. To see what was accomplished". Yup, there is a lot of bad out there (A-Rod and the ilk) but alot of good. Obama's point.

|
then why not ask the President to comment about the Jonas Brothers at last nights Grammys? Isn't going to a music concert the same thing?
or better yet, Maybe the President could comment on the judging on American Idol. Don't they have a studio audience too? And American Idol draws a far larger TV audience than a MLB game! LOL!
I really think you are reaching! And you know it! LOL!

It was nice to hear the President smoothly switch from our policy towards Pakistan to baseball. He's a well-rounded individual. He's got the bam and the boom and the bump.

But it is not the "end all-be all" you are making it out to be. This is especially true of baseball which has lost a lot of ground with the American people over the last 20-30 years.
When Baseball had their strike back in 1994, the Country moved along just fine!
Maybe the reporter should have asked an NFL question instead! LOL

Baseball? I watch only the World Series.
That's the point I was trying to make. I'm addressing purely the popularity in comparison to other sports.

26. I think the question was smart. It showed the American people that President Obama has his finger |
|
on the pulse of America. He KNOWS what's going on, i.e. his BLACKBERRY, etc. He doesn't want to lose touch with what average people are talking about. It was a moment that showed he is a regular guy like everyone else. He is a guy, who despite all this trouble, still knows what his favorite team is doing right now. THAT is AMERICAN. He could switch effortlessly to all topics. He is on the case.
Bush didn't even know the price of gas when it spiked to record levels this past summer. He didn't know jack shit.

Great point. IMO, the reporter actually helped Obama a lot tonight, by getting him to connect with the American people in an important way about what might be uppermost in their minds today. President Obama may have built further trust with millions of people tonight. If he agrees with them on things they feel they know about, then they may be more likely to trust him on things about which they feel uninformed.
The average person knows little about the differences between possible fiscal policies, about the size of the "balanced budget multiplier", and other important economic issues touched upon in the press conference.
But just about EVERYBODY has an opinion about million-dollar paydays for secret steroids junkies, and about the flawed message such paydays sends to children. Obama gave them the answer they were looking for (see post number 32 above).
