10. This was not the vote on the bill today
Today was only a procedural vote as to whether to end debate on the bill or not. The vote on the bill itself is tomorrow. It will be the same as the vote today + Cornyn's vote if he votes, but today was not the official vote for or against the bill itself.

11. Wanna make some freeper heads burst in the Houston area?
Call KTRH during Michael Berry's show, pretend to be a republicon and bitch about Cornyn. BTW, apparently Berry is a birther. I heard him chastising a lady for accepting Obama's citizenship without "seeing" his birth certificate, and implying that there is a coverup. He used to at least pretend to be rather mainstream, but since the primaries, he's practically been our own local Hannity.

25. Honestly, I am afraid I would get "stage fright!"
I want someone who is smooth on the delivery to take him on! LOL

And BTW, amigo/a, I don't think we have had the pleasure of meeting either! I think it may be time for an official DU Houston-area meetu! We used to do so regularly (posted in the Texas forum), but we regulars still hang out frequently.

20. In fairness, on a cloture vote a "not voting" is the same as a "no"
You need 60 "ayes" - whether there is zero or 40 "nos" - to break the filibuster.

21. Oops
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 09:04 AM by PBS Poll-435
Edited.

:-)

However, as a compromise to those who were against the revision, the new rule also changed the requirement for determining the number of votes needed for a cloture motion's passage from those Senators "present and voting" to those Senators "duly chosen and sworn". Thus, 60 votes for cloture would be necessary regardless of whether every Senator voted. The only time a lesser number would become acceptable is when a Senate seat is vacant. (For example, if there were two vacancies in the Senate, thereby making 98 Senators "duly chosen and sworn", it would only take 59 votes for a cloture motion to pass.)

However since the junior seat from MN is vacant, it would have only taken 59 yesterday.
