Washington Times: Obama snubs black press
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 09:46 AM by Jackeens

After the first black president completed his first prime-time press conference, the black press was red hot.

"We were window dressing," said Hazel Edney, a reporter with the National Newspaper Publishers Association, also known as the Black Press of America. "We were nothing more than window dressing."

As the media filed into the stately White House East Room on Monday night, the reporter was shocked to find herself in the front row. Alongside her were the top news agencies, Associated Press, Reuters; also up front, 86-year-old Helen Thomas, who started covering presidents 50 years ago.

6. And if he had called upon all men, they would have said he snubbed women
reporters; had he called on mostly black or non-white reporters, they'd have claimed he plays favorits because he's black! I never pay attention to the Wash. Times, and this is one of the reasons why!

27. At least the post is an actual newspaper...
albeit a bad one. The Moonie Times doesn't even pretend to journalism.

9. Ain't clicking that linkee.
Do I really need to point out that it's in the right wing's interest to try to foment controversy when none actually exists?

The Moonie Times is also posted every wingnut's favorite cite, a hideous piece about the CBO supposedly dissing the stimulus plan which--I'm not making this up--didn't include a link to the CBO report.

And no, I'm not linking to that Moonie Times story. Fuck them.

10. I don't feel like looking at the article
but what, they felt like they were window dressing because they were put in the front row? Ed Shutlz was also in the front row, where was his question? Politico didn't get a question, right? Though, I too would be bitter if Fox got a question over me, but whatever.

18. well, there's plenty of time for that not to happen.
Hopefully, Obama will call on lots of people (like the Huffington Post, as he did last night) who have gotten shut out over the last couple of years. Still, is not calling on someone a "snub"?

14. Haha. Obama asked questions of at least 2 African American reporters.
Try again, Washington Times.

Although wouldn't the WT have loved it if Obama had asked a question of this reporter? Then it would have been, "Obama shows preference for unknown Black newspapers".

23. Mixed feelings about this.
On one hand, why does the WT's care about it? I watch Tara on CNN from the WT give her opinion all the time. She generally so far off the map with what she has to say I have to double check her identity as a woman and as an AA. The other question it brings to mind is out of all their years in circulaiton, what kinds of racial disparity pieces have they done...to what effect?

On the other hand, AAs in different fields are going to give both Obamas what for if they choose to ignore their businesses or their professional abilities. I think about that Inauguration Day/Ball and the critique from Black designers. I don't think the AA business people should forsake the opportunity the Obamas represent to get their business out there. I also don't think the Obamas should be chained to any particular expectation about how they should conduct their business. When AAs trail blaze, there is no road map to sustain their travel. Either they can let critics run their business or the Obamas can manage their own affairs. At the end of the day, they will be remembered for what they accomplished.

BTW, I hope Michelle continues to make her way through all the Federal agencies. I have no idea what she wants to accomplish, but it has to help those workers know they might have the chance to have the ear of the First Lady.

24. Ha!
Hilarious!

The Politco promoting a controversy made up by the Moonie Times. Me thinks there's a couple of news flingers that are a wee bit jealous they didn't get called on by our new President - and I'm not talking about the National Newspaper Publishers Association.

25. It's SO unprofessional and unethical if this reporter gave them this quote
While we have been habituated to not expect this anymore because of certain clowns on TV news, a reporter is never to put themselves inside a story or make themselves the story.

Pretty sad, if this reporter did indeed make this remark after a single press conference. It isn't about her and she should know that.
