Primetime Ratings: Obama Press Conference Averages 36.9 Mil Viewers
By David Tanklefsky -- Broadcasting & Cable, 2/10/2009 1:01:07 PM MT
CBS won a close race with ABC, thanks in part to new episodes of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, which had a series high, according to fast national ratings.

President Obama’s first televised press conference averaged 36.9 million viewers across the four major broadcast networks (of course this doesn't take into account cable numbers so the total was much higher). The conference went almost exactly an hour, starting at 8, and had similar ratings across ABC (3.1/8), CBS (3.0/8), and NBC (3.1/8). ABC was tops among total viewers with 11.5 million. Fox also aired the press conference but finished fourth with a 2.2/6. The CW drew a 0.8/2 with a re-run of Gossip Girl.

3. And that's just NETWORK. Cable isn't in those numbers.
Can you even imagine the numbers he'll get with the speech to the Joint Session? I read that Barack is selling books, selling magazines, and he's the top draw on TV -- and the Republicans have............? Limbaugh? Hannity? McConnell? O'Reilly? Really!!! Actually, I see the Republicans in 2012 turning to someone like Gen. Petraeus, because I foresee he'll make the MacArthur Mistake ere long.

8. Didn't I read in WaPo where the networks were complaining?
It seems they thought our President was giving too many press conferences which would take away their ratings. Hmmmmm.

12. They lost advertising revenue...
Ratings aren't the issue inasmuch as the advertising dollars that they receive. Remember that only 22 minutes out of every half hour is an actual show. So that leaves 14 minutes in an hour that is nothing but commercials trying to sell stupid shit to the public. The advertisers pay the networks to run those commercials so that they can reach as wide of an audience as possible. When the President holds an hour long news conference (no commercials obviously LOL), it takes away from their ad revenue even if the ratings are really good.

4. How many TV networks broadcast American Idol?
One.

So it's not surprising that more people watched Obama's new conference since all the major TV networks covered it live.

However, Obama handled the news conference well and it's good that 37 million people had the opportunity to contrast his news conference with the ones called by the idiot President, George W. Bush.

16. And yet...
a vast majority of the calls on C-SPAN's shows come from right wingers. And I don't mean just conservative people, I mean whackjobs that believe every bullshit lie and conspiracy ever invented regarding Obama.

17. True, C-Span seems to attract nutters as well. But at least I can watch a speech
or press conference or whatever and not get constant BS annoying and grating commentary over it. I want to shout at the tv, shut up already! C-Span even had Stephanie Miller on the other night, a full hour! :)

and other online venues?

The total number of people who will have watched at least some of that presser could be many millions more.
